Suggestions for Iron Chef Ingredient

Lollie.......the argument is the "ingredient". Unfortunately soup and pizza really aren't ingredients and they got through. Neither is salad, gumbo, chili, gravy and cocktails. They're all a mixture of ingredients.

All of which if you watch Iron Chef none of the above have ever been in their challenge.
I always assumed before that our challenge here was to mimick the premise of the show but tweaked a bit to suit the needs of our group's interests and prefferences.
Why bend the rules for some members interest but not for others....??

Thanks Peeps. The argument was that the "comfort food" was too broad a range. So if we want to be fair about it we need to edit out those ingredients I've mentioned. Salad, chili, gravy, gumbo, cocktails. They are not specific ingredients!

And to change the word ingredient is too late now with all the broohaha going on. If that's the case we should then keep comfort foods.

I'm just sayin.............

I agree Dee. If you don't want to do the comfort foods, don't do it. There are some that I don't plan on doing....such as wild game. Go figure.....I'm not going to argue that it's not something everyone would choose. Go for it if you want.

Thank you Ray and Peep. I fixed post #293. I have trouble counting above 20 cause I run out of digits. LOL

Et Al - The list of ingredients does indeed not contain all ingredients. I cannot see where that can be disputed. The items on the list were suggested by the members of the site.

My selection was not on the list and several objected. We return to the list.

Please read posts #262, #265, #267, #286 and #287. Folks were pretty specific in what they wanted. Posts #286 and #287 clearly state that two of our past IC's should not have been run.

This begs the question, where you all of you want to go with this?

- Edit the list and remove all non ingredients.
- Leave the list as is and continue on, with the caviat that the list will be adhered to.
- Another suggestion that the majority are OK with.

In the front of each Iron Chef it says "
As with the other ICs, this is a challenge to ourselves. There is no judging, and no winner. We are ALL winners in this since we will all benefit from the creativity and new recipes that this challenge will bring us." This is about enjoying the contest. The IC's should be something to enjoy, not dispute.

I think people need to be more open minded and flexible, we all like different things here.....if we can't accept that sometimes we just aren't always going to want the same things and that there will be times you might rather choose to sit out.....then maybe we should go STRICTLY by the orig Iron Chef's Rules.
Like I said before if you don't want to bend the rules for everyone (within reason of course) then don't bend them at all.

Hear, hear Dee.............that's what I've been saying all along!!!!!! You join in or you don't. What's so hard about that??

So my interpretation is;
Because a few people bitched, which has been done before with certain ingredients, the ingredient, or "challenge" for a better word was changed.
That said, something on the list was chosen already before "comfort foods" was thrown out there, Wild game "terrestial" or somethingoroether...
But the powers that be thought the random number system wasn't working correctly, or to suit them at any rate, so Comfort foods was thrown into the mix after a discussion on a separate thread on how that would make a good IC challenge.

Am I here so far?

So my overall thought or interpretation of comfort food as a challenge, was everybody basically taking a week off to post whatever meal you felt like. Even though it was drastically breaking the rules, but these rules have been drastically broken since shortly after the inception of this little IC thing. That has been mentioned before.
I looked at comfort foods like a no brainer category. Just post a meal you consider comfort food. Pretty simple.

And for the person with one post that stepped right up to the plate (gotta love those first time posters that like to stir the pot with their first post... ever hear of the intro thread?), go ahead, make your milk and cookies.

None of this BS would even be going on if people just followed the rules or guidlines already set. Or you should have said something back then.

Edit:

Current list for future Battles.
32. Squid
Ackkk!
I thought it was lettuce?? :yum:

Look, make whatever.. geezus, it's not like anyone's out to win an award or anything.
If rules be rules, so be it.
We aren't Food Networkies, we are NCT'ers.
Let it be fun.
May all be visually fed.

You interpret so well Fred!!
That's it in a nutshell...... If you bitch about it enough it will get changed. That's why I said we need to edit the rest of the list so this doesn't happen again.............wishful thinking!

Buzz........isn't #32 still ALCOHOL????!!!!! LOL

well if its alchohol can I use vanilla extract.......since I'm preg and all.....will that still qualify??

Well well, aren't we all in an uproar today?? Isn't is so nice of me to wade in at this 11th hour?? Sorry, but it's another par for the course hellacious week at work and am just reading this now.

I am surprised that this can cause so much rancor. It's meant to be fun and challenging at the same time. Personally, there are only a few rules I think we should stick too. It has to be something you made, and something you made the week of the challenge. As for the word ingredient vs. actual item, semantics. I'm also of the opinion that the original list was agreed upon, regardless if it's an ingredient or item, so leave the list alone. I can tell you right now I'm not getting involved with tofu, but that's just me. As for wild game...it's going to be tough to get that around here but I'll give it my best shot. oh...hahahaha..no pun intended.
Andy, I love you, but the idea of tossing in Comfort food because you suspected not too many would participate in wild game, while done with good intentions, shouldn't have happened. It's a random pick, and the bear wins. Did I have dinner plans for the comfort food? yes. Can I change it? Probably.

This isn't meant to be intimidating. Give it your best college try. Don't stay away because you don't think you are good enough. Nonsense. If you make it, and people eat it, it's great! End of the day, this just boils down to cooking something and taking a picture of it.

There is the option of running two challenges this week. The comfort food, however, was not in the original or secondary list. Give it it's own thread. We did agree to do holiday foods the week of Thanksgiving, yes? That wasn't on the original list either. So, please, leave the list alone, go out and find some road kill, cook it and take a picture of it. Make some grilled cheese cookies with creamed eggs on top (xoxoxo) and take pictures of that, too. Put those pictures in Andy's Comfort Foods thread. And if you don't all settle down immediately, I'll be forced to put the latex back on and spank all of you till you cry like little girls.

But, don't think I'm cooking any tofu...damn shit reminds me of erasers.

Okay, time to get to work.:chef::chef:

I can apologize - Which I did.
I can say it will not happen again - which it won't.
I can do no more than that.

If anyone feels that more than or other than that is appropriate. Please say so.

Oh! - On edit - So far as powers that be, Whatever I did in this thread was on my own, in an attempt to help something popular keep going and in no way connected to the moderator or admin staff at NCT.

There's been a lot of discussion about what items should be on the list and what items shouldn't. It seems to me that those discussions should be discussed when they're added onto the list instead of when they are picked. There's a lot less emotion at that time and it prevents the two day postponement while people argue over whether garlic or sushi or whatever should have been on the list.

There certainly seems to be more chat about the validity of each weeks challenge than there are entries.

In the posts that followed, there seemed to be a consensus, however in light of the last round of disagreement, I thought I'd ask the question again. Thanksgiving is just 2 weeks away. Let's decide now, instead of AFTER the Battle has been issued!

Please weigh in here. (Nicely)

In the Battle Turkey Results thread, DeeLady suggested a repeat of Turkey during Thanksgiving for the IC that week.

The more I think about it, the more I like the idea. I’d like to take it step further though. I’d suggest that, for the week of 11/22 through 11/29, we have a special:

“NCT’s Holiday Iron Chef: Battle Thanksgiving 09”

The Battle would be open to any dish that you consider to be a hallmark of your Thanksgiving feast. Everything from Drinks, to Main courses, to Desserts……using ANY ingredient would be open. The idea being that we all pull deep and display the best of the best of our Thanksgiving cooking traditions.

This would also include creative uses of leftovers!

In the results thread, I’d post all items by category, so I imagine a large Results thread that would start with Appetizer, then go to Side Dish, then Main Course, then Dessert. That one thread would be a veritable Thanksgiving cookbook, and surely a source of inspiration for anyone looking to plan a Thanksgiving feast.

What does everyone else think?

If everyone agrees, then let’s plan for the IC during the week of 11/22 – 11/29 to be Battle Thanksgiving 09.

If this works as well as I think it will, we can do something similar for Christmas.

Any thoughts?

I say go with Battle Thanksgiving!!

Doc, I would love a forum that is devoted to Holidays around the world and the food traditions associated with those holidays.
