Suggestions for Iron Chef Ingredient

i understand what your saying.... but i was talked into joining this site as something that would challenge our little brains and have loads of fun with it.. comfort food is everyday type of food... as we have families to feed in our everyday life. do you think that a six year old is going to eat Oysters Rockerfella??? I had a 27 year old tell no way... thats why we came here to do it for us and the fun of competition. I believe comfort food is not and IC catagory that would be any fun or competative. i'll wait until next spin of the wheel!!!!

The one I am thinking of would be suitable for young children but can also look really good. All these competitioons are about stretching ourselves and showing what we can do. We all have different family situations - the rest of my family would not touch seafood, but that does not stop me enjoying the variety of dishes that came out.

The poboy would probably go down a storm - if they did not know it was oysters.

The IC thread is only one small part of the site - the rest of the forums have great recipes to suit all people, post you favourites or look up for something different.

Next time it is, then. Its always good seeing what someone new has to present. I hope you join in next week.

This is the 26th IC........we've had many ingredients and there are many yet to come. I agree some of the ingredients aren't what a "normal" family would use in an everyday setting. But it could be fun to try something different without going out of your comfort zone. Not all of us have that luxury. Most of the meals I have made I gear toward my family if I decide to make it.
I really hope this won't turn you off to joining another time.......please look at all the other recipes that have been posted that seem more to your liking. I've tried quite a few of them and yes, they're geared towards a family of young and old alike. I appreciate your opinion!

Really, when I was a kid, if I was sick enough to be in bed it was ginger ale and pretzels, just to get something in me I imagine. Although ginger is supposed to calm a stomach... not too sure about ginger ale though.

I think comfort food can be very challenging esp. if you choose to use an old family recipe. While comfort food can cover such a large assortment of everyday foods (chocolate chip cookies, grilled cheese ect.) it also definately includes complicated age old dishes that were made 100% from scratch from our ancestors. The challenge is in yourself on how creative you can be and how deep you may dig into those timeless old favorites.

I'm with whitchy. Comfort food is too wide an area and can mean just about anything to anyone. My personal favorite comfort food is an edible la-z-boy but I doubt it will win any contests. Also, they're difficult to make.

But that's the whole idea...........make whatever your comfort food is. It doesn't matter if no one else thinks the same thing. I'm sure if I made my creamed eggs on toast people would stick their noses up at it but to me it's comfort food. Sure it's a broad area to work with but we've got people from all over and what's comfort food to one is not to another. I think it will be interesting to see what everyone comes up with.

If I make tomato soup and grilled cheese, no ones going to make fun of it, or they'll wear it bwahahaha!!
J/k.. comfort food for some might be a sirloin steak smothered in onions with mashed potatoes, for others.. peanut butter and jelly and a glass of moo..
So it's like whateva.. play or not.

What Whitchy said....... What Buzzard said..................

You can't change horses in the middle of a "race"

Spin the wheel ; list the ingredient, and BAM ! We have an Iron Chef Competition..........

If you guys want or need a "comfort Food" thread, start it !
Rules is Rules....................................

To repeat.........."comfort Food" is NOT AN INGREDIENT !

The theme of Iron Chef is to have one ingredient, and everyone makes something of it. So we thought it would be fun to start an Iron Chef tradition here at NCT where an ingredient is picked, then everyone makes their dish from it.

We are either doing an "Iron Chef" or we are not.......

But there's no reason for y'all to get your shorts in a knot........just do your thing, and some of us will wait till y'all come back to the subject at hand .........

Maybe I'll just stay out of this one, and that's cool.
I love you all too much to get all nit-picky about things.
If some of you do it, that's great.
Perhaps I'll bump my Comfort Food thread I made a while ago in the future, and see where that goes too.

By way of appology to all of you. I have heard from more than one member that they avoid these threads because they do not cook to this level. I actually did spin the wheel before starting this weeks thread it came up wild game. I am on my handheld and looking up the number would be really difficult. I am of the opinion that comfort food would garner more entries than wild game. I also did not think it fair to spin tilI I got something that seemed viable. I do however know when I have made a mistake. Please forgive me. I was only trying to involve more people.

Therefore wild game it is. I will change the thread and references when I get home .again, sorry to have erred.

Ok...........it was just a thought and personally I thought a good one. Bad me.

Since we're going "there"........we need to remove salad, gumbo and cocktails........since neither one of those are ingredients.

Why should the list be edited of things like salad, gumbo and cocktails?
Those are all pretty cut and dry within the class of a specific area, right?
Just like soup, onions and garlic IMO.
Walk into a restaurant and ask to see the salad selection, and you're going to get shown a pretty wide array of salads, as for gumbo, there are many different types that can be made.. and cocktails.. welllll that's endless!

You could change that slightly to chillies - ie any hot pepper, oh they are lready on. Delete it then. Same for gravy, again not an ingredient.

Mollucs needs to be moved to the done list.

Should salad be changed to salad leaves? and cocktails to alcohol? They both then become ingredients rather than dishes.

Lollie.......the argument is the "ingredient". Unfortunately soup and pizza really aren't ingredients and they got through. Neither is salad, gumbo, chili, gravy and cocktails. They're all a mixture of ingredients.
