Suggestions for Iron Chef Ingredient

Jicama, huh...? With Thanksgiving still 18 days away, and an IC challenge only lasting one week, isn't it pushing the envelope just a tad bit for a Thanksgiving challenge? While we all loved the idea of a Thanksgiving challenge, why would we not wait till the holiday is actually falling in the week? Unless everyone wants to roast a turkey now, and then stuff it back in the freezer, I don't think it's time to do the Thanksgiving challenge.

I don't know a damn thing about jicama except the relish a chef made from it several years ago. Jicama is crisp and refreshing and takes on the flavours of what it's married to very well. It's not crazy expensive either. I've only seen it fresh so unless you have a killer produce aisle or an ethnic shop around you may not be able to participate...but, please, don't not participate because you don't know what to do with jicama. Google some recipes and find one that you think you'd like. Challenge yourself. Expand your culinary horizons, you might surprise yourself!

So....jicama it is. In my opinion, the Thanksgiving challenge should begin on Monday 23 November.

Vera,

Sorry if I wasn't clear, but that's what I was saying. I'm only bringing it up in advance so that we don't end up with an issue after it's been announced. There was quite a debate over what constituted a legitimate Iron Chef ingredient, and I thought it would be better to resolve it beforehand.

This week: Battle Jicama
Next week: Battle: (random ingredient)
Thanksgiving week: Battle Thanksgiving

Anyone else want to weigh in?

I have a suggestion for the IC ingredient :sorry:

I suggest that if the ingredient seems a bit "odd" and doesn't appear to generate any interest. That we see if the person who suggested it is even an active poster anymore. Maybe reevaluate whether it is in that week's challenge, or maybe gets put on hold. It's kinda bad when the OP of the ingredient doesn't post a dish... IMO. They may have held the key to unlocking the potential of this weird fruit, or veggie, whatever it was.
Kudos to LT and Witchy though :a1:

And yeah, I know... to late to change things now, but it was just a thought.

Thanks Adillo! Love it! I have a recipe for Wyatt's Eggplant Casserole that I have been wanting to try.

Out of curiosity, is "chili" looking for chili recipes, or creative uses of chili (chili fries, chili dogs...)? Might as well clear that up before it hits.

Or Polish chili with potatoes........

I was just sayin', chili isn't really an ingredient unless they meant peppers or powder, and I noticed chicken wings and bread are on there too, so did the OPs mean recipes for those, or using them as ingredients in something bigger?
Not that it matters

ohhhhhhh...eggplant. Sicilians have a way with eggplants. Northern Italians as well. Recently, I've been introduced to the recipes of New Orleans Italians..and will possibly go that way. Either way, Lou wins.

Don't go there.........it's already been beaten to death....

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet or not. Instead of doing an ingredient, maybe we could do a color. Say if we did green, then people could choose from an array of green things that they may already have on hand, rather then making a special trip to the store.

I can think of several foods in nearly every color of the rainbow. Maybe we could stick with the ROY G BIV colors, and throw in white, black, and brown (gray sounds ucky, but I guess it could work).

Just a thought...

Works for me!

I’ve added a Colors entry. In that entry are the sub entries of the Roy G. Biv colors. If Colors (the main entry) comes up, then I’ll do a second RNG draw to pick a color. Each time Color comes up, the list will be updated to delete the color that was last used.

However, due to the fact that Indigo and Violet are so similar, I just combined both of those colors into “Purple”.
