Haven't a few of those like ribs been done before?

What do you mean?

In the “Past Battles” part of the list, you can see all of the ingredients per past IC challenge. IC15 was ribs.

Granted, whenever beef (currently #1 on possible ingredients) comes up, someone may opt to do beef ribs, so there‘s definitely a possibility for overlap.

Time for the next ingredient:

In the Battle Turkey Results thread, DeeLady suggested a repeat of Turkey during Thanksgiving for the IC that week.

The more I think about it, the more I like the idea. I’d like to take it step further though. I’d suggest that, for the week of 11/22 through 11/29, we have a special:

“NCT’s Holiday Iron Chef: Battle Thanksgiving 09”

The Battle would be open to any dish that you consider to be a hallmark of your Thanksgiving feast. Everything from Drinks, to Main courses, to Desserts……using ANY ingredient would be open. The idea being that we all pull deep and display the best of the best of our Thanksgiving cooking traditions.

This would also include creative uses of leftovers!

In the results thread, I’d post all items by category, so I imagine a large Results thread that would start with Appetizer, then go to Side Dish, then Main Course, then Dessert. That one thread would be a veritable Thanksgiving cookbook, and surely a source of inspiration for anyone looking to plan a Thanksgiving feast.

What does everyone else think?

If everyone agrees, then let’s plan for the IC during the week of 11/22 – 11/29 to be Battle Thanksgiving 09.

If this works as well as I think it will, we can do something similar for Christmas.

Any thoughts?

i think it is a great idea. i don't start turkey day prep till tuesday or wednesday of the holiday. others may start sooner with cooking and freeze to pop in oven on the morning of the holiday.

i love this idea for ALL the big holidays - thanksgiving, christmas, new years, july 4th, memorial day, labor day and easter (maybe even super bowl sunday). these are the holidays that i celebrate but i would love to see and experience other cultures and their holidays. maybe we could have a celebrations and holidays forum also to celebrate the food customs? i am always looking for new foods to try out.

GREAT IDEA DEE AND KELTIN!!

One more 'YES'!

It would be too much if the RNG pulled up something like Battle Tofu while we're all busy with our holiday preparations. I don't think we'd get much participation.

Giving us all an chance to show off our most special presentations will be great.:applause:

my two cents.............
the more precise an ingredient is, the better;
I'd much rather have a "Squid" category than a "Mollusk" cat.....

Just as I appreciated the "Corn" category a lot more than I would have a "Yellow vegetable" cat.....

my tuppence...
What about gravy? Everyone has their own recipe, some passed down from grandparents or Mum. Winter is drawing in & I just thought it might be a good idea as we'll be making more of it in the coming months...I just wondered..

Keep in mind, the broader the category, the more entries we get. Seafood is a tough one to do. Many folks here expressed dislike for or fear of seafood.

If we have a category for just lobster, you'll get me and maybe one or 2 others. Apparently it's just not something that folks here cook at home, especially those that don't live near a coast. If you expand it to crustaceans, you'll get more because some folks like to cook shrimp or crab, and they're easier to get at the grocery store.

But like Keltin said, if you just lump all shellfish into one group, then you wipe out a whole lot of choices in one fell swoop. While the seafood haters might want to see that happen, this gives the seafood lovers a chance to participate with more than one type. Separating the crustaceans from the mollusks gives us a chance to do one from each category.

Think of it the same as having a beef AND a ground meat AND a steak category. Or a pork AND a rib category. Or a chicken AND a chicken wings category. There is some overlap, and no one quibbled about it. I think it has something to do with some of the guys wanting to throw a slab of meat on the grill.

:soapbox:
Remember, it's all in fun. Keltin is doing a great job of coordinating it for us, and no one should get their panties in a wad over it. If you want to criticize the way he did it, then I suggest you volunteer to take it off his hands and do it yourself. Some folks here did the same thing to Vera when she was organizing the apron effort.

We have a rule in our house. If someone does a chore, no one can criticize the way they did it. If you don't like the results (whether it's folding the laundry, loading the dishwasher or mopping the floor) then you do it yourself next time, and do it the way you think it should be done.

This isn't aimed at any one person, just at the general tone of the comments in both this thread and the battle 22 thread.
:twak:

You said it so much better than I would have SS!

It was stated that when Seafood was the IC this week it was: crab, shrimp, lobster, crayfish, any crustacean. I didn't understand the quibbling myself, if you can read you knew what it was. lol

i am not a big seafood eater/lover but i do like clams any way exect fried (i think the high heat turns them into rubber bands) i even like them on the half shell. i like fried fish (cod, sole and flounder and sometimes catfish), anchovies, lox and smoked whitefish. i do like to see seafood dishes prepared and plated (they usually look wonderful). i was confused about the category. thinking clams and scallops come in a shell. i think keltin is doing a great job. i don't eat shrimp very often and crabs, lobster etc even less often but i do love seeing them and reading the recipes because my family loves seafood. SS you lobster tail looked fantastic!!

my mom used to split a whole lobster from head to tail and scoop out the eggs and the other edible inards and saute them in butter then add bread crumbs, spices and herbs mix well and stuff the lobster down the center of body. then she would stick the whole split lobster under the broiler till red and cooked. everyone loved it and always asked her to make it. (also at that time people only really wanted the tiny baby 1 - 2 pounders because they said they tasted better) so when mom would go to the fish monger (Jay's seafood was a tiny shack at the back end of hackensack and it was located in the corner of a huge parking lot next to the railroad tracks and across from the street from a club so it got some traffic) anyway mom would go in and buy the big guys no one wanted. she was cool and made it seem like she was doing them a favor by taking the ones they would loss money on. they gave her a nice price, but in reality THOSE (the 3 - 7 pounders) were the ones she wanted!! LOL the only way she got me to eat them was to bribe me with a glass of rose' LOL
