If you didn't catch this when it aired on Frontline (PBS) last week, take a look. It discusses the way relationships are changing because of the time we spend on the internet. You can watch the entire episode online. It will change the way you think about your computer...

No, I didn't see it.

Thank you for bringing it to my attention. It's been bookmarked on the toolbar, I will watch it, or at least have it playing in the background while doing something else ... multitasking ... one of the things they mention in the introduction.

Overall I think deep immersion in technology is not overly healthy, depending how it's used.

ok, i'll bite. what is healthy? what would make things better?

i'm not being a prick. i'm honestly asking this as the future leader of a lot of american boys who are immersed in this crap.

what would you teach, wart? i need help, and i respect all opinions. no bs.

Never would think your being a prick. Least not yet.

I wanted to make a full thought when I posted, didn't have time , don't have time now, because I like to write to completion.

Short:
Humans are wired for face to face contact.

Shortened attention spans.

Reading on the Web is different than reading a book, and being bookish was seen as weird.

There is the thing about people sitting on their asses instead of moving around, and the health issues there.

Confusion of reality: Read the intro in Karens link, Children doing a VR swimming with dolphins will confuse it for actual swimming with dolphins in the physical world, as time passes.

That brings up the whole 'what's real' thing.

No time now.
...

I just watched the entire 90 minutes. I must say, it was very well done, and very well balanced. Watch it if you get a chance.

It talks about both the advantages and the downside of our increasing use of technology, especially in young people. The program concludes that technology definitely changes how we interact with each other, but in both positive and negative ways. The important thing is to manage the evolution in ways that are more positive than negative. Ultimately, it leaves you with the question, "What will we gain, and what will we give up?"

Technology allows more people to do more things, but it seems people don't do these things as well.

I'm guilty. I have a wood shop. Not a fully outfitted one but good enough. Chippendale made furniture 200 + years ago, still can't fit a thin sheet of paper in the joints and they did it with pit saws and hand planes. I can't match it with my gadgetry.

Plenty of pictures being taken, darn few photographs being made.

I remember when cars went from being designed on drafting tables to designed on computers. Suddenly bland straight lines were the rage, and cars lost their souls.

What's being gained, and whats being lost ...

The washing machine. The washing machine freed people from the drudgery of having to wash clothes. What was the ultimate result? People got more cloths and they now spend more time washing clothes.

I was working with an 'engineer' and asked him how he got his 'figures'. He told me 'the machine (computer) does it'.

I think part of what we're losing is the ability to understand the way things work and how things come to be because there is a machine to do it for us. Somebody needs to understand these things, usually the programmer, not the person you have to work with to resolve the problem.

Food technologies, beef stew is a sac dropped into boiling water ... sear meat? What?

Not enough time to make the stew? Why? All these devices made to allow us to have more leisure time ....

Socially, I believe there is a confusion between personal contact and social interaction with interaction on the web.

Can't reproduce on the web, though god knows enough sites make money off people trying.

Music, Autotune ... What? We laughed at drum machines.

Heres another thing about music ... at one time it was almost difficult to NOT be exposed to different types of music. As a kid I remember listening to the radio and the Mamas and the Papas could be one song, then a Bubble Gum band followed by the Stones ... Today you can listen to one specific genre of music and never get exposed to anything else.

And when one goes into the world they almost can't help but be exposed to varying people. The more socialization becomes web based the more people tend to 'socialize' with 'their own kind', meaning they'll be less likely to be exposed to alternative viewpoints.

Whats wrong with people thinking what they want to think? Nothing , long as it has something to do with reality.

Sick. I have had the cold for two weeks. This (bleeeeeeping) thing ebbs and flows but never goes away. Now to top it all off Mrs. Lefty has a flu bug. Hope you all avoid what is going around.

Feel better soon lefty and mrs!

thanks for the reply, wart. i'll have to read it a few times, lots to think about, and how it will affect my boys.

just one thing to add about the music part: having to buy an album years ago enabled you to hear songs that weren't on the radio seventeen times a day, and often i found them to be the ones that i felt defined the band. the stones and led zep are a perfect examples.

nowadays you pick the one or two popular tunes that you like from an artist, upload them, then move on. it does seem to lack soul.

So the more we've progressed, the more we've lost when it comes to life as a whole.
I can relate to that.
I own a cell phone, but only have it for emergencies.
Do I text? No.
I have this computer to keep me in touch with a lot of things (mostly got it in the beginning to keep in contact with kin across the pond).
I don't pay bills online.
Thankfully, I live in a town so small I can run down to the bank and get the funds I need to go to one location to pay anything from gas to electric.
I remember the days before technology and hold them close to my heart.
No bells and whistles here baby.
I like to keep it simple and think the way I live my life in the age of the web is something I've caught on my own.
I don't follow anyone, but am open to anything that varies outside my thinking.
Simply dance to the beat of my own drum.
My cooking is simple, I am simple and down home.
Love my washing machine (but could wash the lot out by hand and iron it-- not bitching about it at all) because I was brought up to appreciate the simple things, even though I did have the finer things.

I just came freom picking up my daughter from Band Practice. She is in a Big Band,
Like Glen Miller Style. Band Name is The Whats up Band. Check Them out.

Wow Dan! I know you are proud!

As for me, sometimes when things bother you, you just need to take a step back for a little while. I did and I'm okay now so here I am.

are you wearing ruby slippers, sass?

there's no place like home... :)

on that note, 8 hours to go and i'm off on vacation!!! yay!

i'll be checking in here and there using my phone, when i get the chance. otherwise, we rented a cabin and will be schussing down the slopes upstate n.y. all day, and eating in our favourite apres ski restaurants in pine hill and phoenecia every night.

don't have any fun without me, though. :)

No ruby slippers here, just fuzzy socks for my tootsies :-)
It's good to be home after a busy day, which went by very fast!

Have a great time on the slopes, take pics and eat lots of gorgeous food.

I am absolutely physically and mentally exhausted.
Think I'll have an early night, even though it is Saturday.

thanks sass and karen. i'll post pics when we get back.

i'll try to take food pics, but dw gets embarrassed when i do that in restaurants.

Heading out the door soon to drive across town in sleet.. grrrrrr
Going to be working over tonight until around midnight.
Usually I get off around 10:15 if I am lucky.
