Yet another newbie

Re: 15 Year AA Birthday

Wow - 15 years! That's a huge accomplishment, Dan, for you and your wife. Congratulations to the both of you and thank you for sharing it with us. My MIL and FIL and my brother were all alcoholics, but they never managed to get sober and stay sober. I lost all of them to this, so hearing about someone who made it to the other side makes me happier than you can imagine, Dan. Atta Boy!

Re: 15 Year AA Birthday

Dan, I am thrilled for you both! Congratulations on all the hard work that you did to change in all the ways necessary. You both are very inspiring.

Re: 15 Year AA Birthday

That's wonderful news Dan. My father was an alcoholic and it finally killed him 2 years ago. What you and DW have done is a great accomplishment :)

No i ddn't eat any of the cake because i really don't like the stuff but everyone else enjoyed it. I just enjoyed looking at it before it got all cut up. lol

The elephant is plastic.

Re: Happy Birthday Buckytom!!!

Hey BT! Like Susan, I posted a belated birthday message on FB. So although you say you didn't have a good birthday, you at least have a pleasant dilemma to navigate your way through to charcoal, or not to charcoal... that is the question!!!

Enjoy deciding on your deck issue too!!

Congrats to you to BT and to you Wart too!

BT, maybe it depends on your drinking habits. Just like smoking, or eating bad food for that matter, if you can change the situations where you are inclined to indulge in your preferred vice, you can break some of those habits. My mum, in the days she used to smoke, always would light up as she was about to drive the car. Once I pointed it out to her (when she had to quit), she became conscious of it and was able to not do it. The indulgences that you need to satisfy are very hard to give up. Just a thought.

Not saying this about BT, in general:

I would hate to have to guess how many Liquor Heads continued drinking for how many years, or to death, thinking that if they found the right booze at the right place at the right times they could continue drinking.

Even though I know better I still have those thoughts. Makes me ... Laugh ... at myself.

Everyone has a bottom they hit. But everyones bottom is different and at different levels. Not all bottoms are biting heads off live chickens in circus side shows for the next round of 'fix'.

There are some who reach the end when they see where its heading and if they continue it just slows the slide to their bottom. But it doesn't stop it.

Re: 15 Year AA Birthday

bilby, i sorta know what you mean, about changing habits.

i stopped primarily because my wife was upset about it (for her own personal reasons not having to do with me directly). so, in order to prove it wasn't a problem i went cold turkey.

then i thought about the how, when, and why i was drinking. i realized that it changed over the past few years from being a social or culinary thing to one where i drank for stress relief and to help me sleep. i figured that "self medicating" wasn't the right thing to do, so i quit to prevent any possible future problems. now i've found i just don't have the time to waste being tired or hung over. my son needs me to be a good dad, not a tired one.

my goal was to make it for a year, and then re-evaluate. i will have a beer or wine again, not sure when, but it will only be under social circumstances like a camping or fishing trip, or out to dinner with my wife.

i'm proud that i was able to prove this to myself, and hopefully it's brought some peace of mind to my wife.

Re: 15 Year AA Birthday

....keep co-o-o-omin' ba-a-ack...sober! Congratulations, to both of you. I have a couple of one day at a times put together, too. One of my sponsees and I do the Wharf Rats gig...set up a safe space at concerts for recovery folk of all stripes. Pass out candy for the newcomers to keep cravings in check, little yellow stickers so everybody can find a friend on the dance floor or up in the balcony or wherever. Quick meeting at set break. Too many people get into recovery and think they have to quit going to all the places that used to be slippery, and it just ain't so.
