True Grit was an average Duke film, DuVall was good as Pepper, I would have to watch the film again* to remember the part Hopper played, and Campbell was weak. Looking back I can see where Darby's part, played somewhat cardboard-ishly**, could have been to make it a Wayne 'youth film' (Killed my Pa verses killed my husband or brother). Funny how Youth Films have changed.
In the original the 'Fill you're hand you Son-Of-A-Bitch' line always brings a smile to my face. Just remembering that line makes me smile. Reminds me of my parents generation, and my father, when someone has gone too far and for better or worse shits gonna happen.
In the teaser for the remake the 'Fill you're hand' line comes off a bit shrill. I don't know how I feel about that, sort of like finding a burr while putting on a pair of comfortable old shoes.
And in the original The Duke played Rooster in that un-flustered matter of fact Duke style where, once again from the teaser, Bridges plays above the part (court room scene) and with menace (the rest of hte teaser, can't really call what I've seen a trailer).
I can do menace. The laughing at the question while on the stand as though not only was the question a stupid one but the person asking the question was stupid for asking, was a little bit insulting. I far preferred Waynes incredulity at being asked those questions.
Nobody could be more surprised than me at my having so much to say about this as I quit Pop Culture and became jaded in the Disco Era.
But we
are talking the remake of a Wayne film, and there is no one left to make a remake of The Shootist. Except maybe Eastwood. Isn't that a thought.
Yes, I know I'm making these observations on a trailer/teaser, definitely outside the context of the remake. And I know a film needs to be successful in the era it's released.
In comparing the cast and crew from
1969 and
2010, Hathaway vs the Cohens, the main cast then vs now, makes it a can't tell.
Like I ... no one is more surprised than I that I have so much to write on this.
* I'm sure the '69 version will be on cable several times, seems to be how things go with remakes.
** Darby may have been stiff in her part, probably because thats how Hathaway wanted her to play it. She showed a bit more life in her episode of Star Trek.
