Today it's a med run to MAMC, dental appoiment, and tonight usher at church for the Thanksgiving Eve service.
Feel better JW with that headache. Rest your eyes!My wife is working night 12's so I'm quiet during the day. I did a few chores, shopped at Freds and spent a lot of time with twitter. This evening I had an eye appointment then went to Dave's for dinner. I still have a headache from the dilation.
I came home to a surprise yesterday. My freezer had gone out and had been out for quite a while . Everything was still cool to the touch but no ice crystals at all. I lost about 15 lbs of ground beef, about 10-12 lbs of chicken, two steaks, some pork chops and baby back ribs, 2 bags of fish, a bag of shrimp, a box of crab cakes, 8 qts of homemade soup, and a bunch of other stuff.
So I got the silly thing all cleaned up and decided to plug it back in to see what would happen. I put it on coldest and put a milk jug of water in there. This morning the water was frozen solid, and the freezer seems to be working fine. I don't know what I'm going to do. It's probably 12 to 15 yrs old.
The worst part is that I just bought my first food vacuum sealer and sealed all of that meat. The good part is that all that vacuum sealed stuff was a breeze to throw out...no leaky mess or smell at all. The shrimp and fish, which were in re-sealable bags that they're sold in, were a totally different story...Peee Ewww.
If the freezer is a frost free one; meaning you don't have to manually defrost it, then don't assume it is ok yet. There is what is called a defrost cycle which is initiated every 12 hours by a timer, and through a defrost thermostat, and a defrost termination thermostat.
Defrost is done by electric heater coils affixed to the cooling coil.
So there are variables that can take a while to show up.
Stick a thermometer in the freezer bottom area. With the control set to coldest, after 12 hours, it should read at least -5F to -10F below zero.
Keep a check that it holds at those temperature ranges.
Be sure the condenser coil is not blocked with debris. It may need to be vacuumed out!
Good Luck!
Thanks! It is frost free. It's still working as of this morning. I've just about talked myself into trying to replace the thermostat. This guy makes it look easy, and the thermostats seem to be under $20.

I'll go do some reading on the defrost termination thermostat and timer. That sounds pretty complicated.
Thanks again
Editing after reading up - I've just shown my ignorance about all of this . Here's what I think I'm going to do...replace the defrost thermostat and the timer. Both of those look relatively easy and the parts are pretty cheap. If that doesn't do it, then I'll just buy a new freezer. The cost of a compressor and service call would be about $300, and I can get a new one for about $450.
Jimmy - does this sound reasonable, or am I going about this all wrong?
Sounds reasonable if you can tackle it. Just so you know, the defrost timer on that age box, is a mechanical clock / contact / device. There is a knob that you can turn slowly till it clicks which will turn on the defrost of the coil ice as long as the conditions are right. That will be proved if you can hear the sizzle and dripping of water into the plastic pan that sits under the freezer.
Any idea what the temperature is in the freezer?
It was last day in work, now I have vacation for 4 weeks and then I need to looking for something else to do or study. From my workmates I got an orchid and as one of our patient got results from the hospital as she has an influenza, also a flu shoot.
The flower and the free flu shot - not bad gift.
Now I have a lot of time for knitting socks and baking for the Christmas.
That is a defrost timer, ok, and that and the defrost thermostat , can be installed in any order. Now, just so you know, the defrost T-stat, is what is clipped onto a spot of the evaporator on the back section of the freezer behind the panel. It's not the Temperature Setting Thermostat that you turn i.e. Colder / Warmer.Enjoy your vacation, Saliha!
I worked today, the usual... second shift.
Not a bad day, just verrrrry busy!
