Threads were disappearing because they became uncivil. Others closed because they became too serious and passed beyond casual chit chat and discussions. It is hard to follow what is happening simply because there is no set rule for what to do with a thread when it 'turns' bad. Sometimes we can just edit posts, sometimes delete posts, and sometimes we have to close the thread or even 'disappear' it. We hate doing that one, but each action is based on the individual thread being moderated and what is the minimum we can get away with doing instead of just closing it automatically or 'disappearing' it automatically.
We created the Romper Room so those threads that turned too serious or deep would have a home and could be kept off the general forums.
Personal attacks are still not allowed anywhere. Some became confused over this, and we are working to eliminate their confusion.
However, I do agree with you in that perhaps we were not as clear as we should have been on the Romper Room, and need some clearer rules to govern it.
We are working on it, and as always very appreciative of your input Fred, it is often of great help to us as we navigate forward.

How about adding this VB hack.

If that hack will let you ignore whole areas, then users can just put Romper Room on ignore.

Edited to add: In reading the responses to that hack, it sems this is the better way to do it?

within the rules

not within the rules

Thank you. That's exactly my point.
When you have to bring up the rules to keep people from calling each other assholes, then freedom of speech has obviously overidden civility.
And it also shows that peoples' antagonism towards one another is driving some people to being less than civil... sometimes. Not all the time, but sometimes.

It's freedom of speech with published limits. Don't violate the limits or expect to get spanked. Done!

We are trying our best to keep a handle on it Fred, but some people unfortunately equate free speech with being rude or uncivil. They don't realize you can practice free speech without resorting to personal attacks.
We work to keep them in check, but unfortunately there are also some that simply enjoy stirring the pot and causing trouble.
They do get caught, and it does catch up with them, but it takes time. These types are everywhere on the Internet, and as soon as one goes, another will come.

Yes, I know why threads were disappearing, Mav. What you said in your first paragraph was exactly what I meant. We needed a place for those threads to go that got heated, so you folks created the RR. That was a lot better than merely deleting the threads.
What it has turned into though, is a place for members to start threads they know will get heated or draw controversey.

And again, I'm not saying whether I'm for or against that, just that there are plenty of forums on the internet for discussing topics that are way over borderline. Isn't that what FF is for?

If there's anything we can take solace in..... is that nobody has been acting like a food snob, we're all to busy rehashing this shit :lol::lol:

LOL hadn't even thought of that!! Been awhile since I got yelled at for my little green can!

I hear you about the RR, and agree. Certainly not what we intended!

Chow does have some good points. When RR was created, I too thought it was going to be the catcher’s mitt for foul balls. A landing ground for the run away threads. I didn’t think it would become a place where post after post would be created just to see how hot it could get. I’ve got no problem not clicking on a thread, but it does seem that RR has turned into something more than its original intention.

Is it possible to take out “Create a New Thread” in RR? That way, only threads that get moved there can be active?

And I'm so thankful we are without Food Snobs here!!! Been a while since I got beat over the head for using a McCormick spice grinder!

Something I've known for a long time is, no matter what "It" is there will always be someone who will take offense to "It", or be offended by "It", no matter if they have to work hard at finding something wrong with "It".

In short, there will always be someone to get pissed off at anything.

In this stance, unless there was a post removed the person 'leaving' hadn't even posted in the thread.

Seems to me that person wanted to be pissed off and AARP was only the excuse.

So now everyone has to walk around this place making sure not to brush up against another, being touchy feely and not make remarks or jokes that may possibly "irritate" someone, even in innocence?

Lets create another DC while we're at it.

Very reasonably said Wart, people are always going to have their toes stepped on from time to time by someone or other, unfortunately sometimes people forget to think before they hit enter....does that mean the only solution is to pick up and go? Or build a plethora of rules to prevent each inncident from happening again? Because just as was said ...isn't that what most of us just left to get away from?
To my knowledge this isn't an issue that has been recurrent....insults of age or the like? And if I were to base my decission to stay or go simply on one persons opinion that I did not care for....heck I would never be able to find a place to hang my hat! What about the rest of us? What about the people who are there for you when you aren't feeling well, or lost a loved one,or those who have been there done that so you know they can offer great advice on any given topic, or to cheer you on because you got 3 dots, or who you know will always crack you up by popping up out of nowhere to make a silly little remark??
Does one thoughtless comment (joke or no joke) really throw all that out the window?

Or in Kathe's case a thread that you don't relate to...I've never understood how so easily the minority becomes ruler over the majority??

I love the ideas you have presented Keltin, I like both being able to ignore certain forums if you choose to... not an option for me tho. And I like the idea of not being able to create new threads.

Nicely said again Dee.

:

Absolutely correct, Keltin, and a good idea that didn't come up when we were discussing the creation of RR. We'll see what we can do. Thanks.

Actually you have that ability now by simply looking at the forum a thread is in followed by what the subject says. Now to ignore it simply don't click on it and once done reading what you want click on Quick Links followed by Mark Forum Read.

I'm sorry that you are leaving Karen, and I wish you weren't. I will miss your insightful, and culturally enlightening posts.

That being said, I doubt that I could ever feel insulted by some named bowlingshirt...
