Think I'll join jkath - different reasons

I think some of you are missing the point. I don't believe that people are announcing their displeasure and departure out of some immature need for attention. I think that they are trying to tell the community that they find how some people behave here has become intolerable for them and why. Further, if this continues more people will leave and this grand experiment in having free speech will implode due to the lack of civility. I have thought people have been drunk on freedom and had hoped that things would settle down here.

I am glad that babe has decided to stay and I wish that you would reconsider Karen. The only way to affect change is to stay and make a difference. I am sorry that your feelings were hurt; I truly am.

I know of others who feel the same way as babe. Others may soon follow if this issue is not addressed.

Now you have my $40 worth. As a super site supporter, I hate to see valuable members, people who I consider my friends leave.
PieSusan

What issue?? We created a place for people to 'play' and be more 'adult' partly because members, such as yourself, advocated freedom of speech and not censoring the site like Napoleon and crew.
If the new play area is not to your liking, don't go there. That is why it is in its own place.
If you see a thread that you think is more appropriate there, report it so we can look at it and see if it needs to be moved.
If you click on a thread and see something you don't like, may I suggest you stop reading the posts and leave the thread?
That is the real freedom here.... sad it is being missed in all this.

Maverick, I never in my above comments said that I am not for freedom of speech. Don't put words in my mouth--Where you got that from, I do not know. I just commented that there are costs to freedom of speech and hurt feelings are one of them and people will leave because of it. Civility is not inconsistent with freedom of speech.

Further, one of the points of having a forum is to build membership and keep people wanting to come back. Evidently, you are building a community that people want to leave.

It use to be advised that one should only write online in forums what one would want to share on the front page of one's local newspaper because that is what one is doing.

These are your words, I didn't put them in your mouth, you did:

"Further, if this continues more people will leave and this grand experiment in having free speech will implode due to the lack of civility. I have thought people have been drunk on freedom and had hoped that things would settle down here."

Seems pretty clear to me there, it is a strong statement coming out against freedom of speech, equating it to being a drunkard. Last time I checked that was a negative term not a positive one.
Also, as highlighted above in bold, you are still operating under the false assumption that somehow I, personally am building this site. You are quite incorrect in that, as we have attempted numerous times to explain to you. I am not sure just how many different ways we can say it so that you will start to understand this is a group effort here.

" It use to be advised that one should only write online in forums what one would want to share on the front page of one's local newspaper because that is what one is doing. "

Isn't that why we have the Romper Room?? People can make up their own minds about what to read and not read. THEY HAVE THE POWER TO CHOOSE!

Yea, I don't understand where that message is getting lost either??

I thought you WERE the Karma God!!!! :)

I apologize for any hijacking or lightheartedness brought on by my comments and in no way mean nor want to offend anyone.....

Maybe that should be my new sig.....

I stand by words Maverick. In any community, part of the social contract is civility and Maverick civility is not inconsistent with freedom of speech. Without it, your community will lose members. Would people be so rude to one another if they were talking face to face or do they feel emboldened because they are hidden behind the computer screen.

Yes, one has the freedom to be rude but if one is rude consistently, one will lose friends. Feelings will get hurt and the byproduct will be lost members.

I am not advocating that there ought to be official rules to change people's behavior which is where I believe you are confused. I am trying to get people to see that their words have consequences. Lost eyeballs eventually will mean lost revenue for Doc. He is trying to build a site and not lose members. Freedom of speech requires a tougher skin. Not everyone is willing to accept it and it can be a challenge. In every marketplace of ideas there will be ideas that are abhorrent and folks will either try to work things out or move on.

Maybe some people just need to come down off of their self-righteous high horse and accept the fact that this is a diverse community...live and let live!

I stand by words Maverick.

I have no idea what that means...

In any community, part of the social contract is civility and Maverick civility is not inconsistent with freedom of speech.

That is not true, please see the rules and guidelines of the forum for clarification on that. Civility is required and freedom of speech does depend on being able to attack people, cuss them out, or call them names.

Without it, your community will lose members. Would people be so rude to one another if they were talking face to face or do they feel emboldened because they are hidden behind the computer screen.

The first part makes no sense, without what? Communities loose members all the time, and gain them all the time, this is not for any one reason and in fact usually has more to do with the person joining or leaving than the forum itself. The second part? In my experience yes some people are just as rude in person as they are on the internet.
But what has this got to do with not clicking on a thread that may contain content you don't like?

Yes, one has the freedom to be rude but if one is rude consistently, one will lose friends. Feelings will get hurt and the byproduct will be lost members.

Members come members go, it is the way things work. But are you saying someone here is consistently rude? I don't see that at all... and again, please read the rules and guidelines. Rude behavior and personall attacks have nothing to do with freedom of speech and are against the rules.

I am not advocating that there ought to be official rules to change people's behavior which is where I believe you are confused. I am trying to get people to see that their words have consequences. If you are not advocating a change in rules (coulda fooled me there), then what are you advocating? The point was that if you don't like the content of a thread, leave it.
What exactly is your counter-point to this? That would be where I am confused.

Just to add my .02, I thought the romper room was created so threads would stop disappearing (due to people's lack of civility anymore I'll add) and to have a place those threads could be moved to. I remember somebody saying that's was what it was for.
Now it appears to be a whole nuther website. One contained within this site to allow people to start threads on whatever controversial subject they might choose.

Now I'm not saying I'm yay or nay, this is just my haphazard thought, but when people move their mouse over the various threads on the New Posts page, they may not enjoy seeing some of the first few sentences in some of the RR threads being created. At least that's how I work the forum. Then I'll look over and see what the hell forum what I read was just posted under  lol. And this has more to do with jkath I believe and not Karen. I fully agree the AARP thing was just a joke.
Maybe the romper room should be a click on only forum and not show up under New Posts (if that's possible)?

And.... IMO.... freedom of speech and repsect or civility seem to have a hard time coexisting here anymore. It's one thing to say shit when typing. It's quite another to call someone an asshole because your opinion varies from theirs.

I think you made some very valid points Chow.

And stop making me wish I had some beer here!!!!

And well said Buzz. It seems to me some are forgetting this is a fairly new forum, and just experiencing a ton of growth. It takes time, patience, and help from our members to build it up into something we can all feel happy to call home.
It is a work in progress, all are welcome to come do some 'work' on it, LOL!

Threads were disappearing because they became uncivil. Others closed because they became too serious and passed beyond casual chit chat and discussions. It is hard to follow what is happening simply because there is no set rule for what to do with a thread when it 'turns' bad. Sometimes we can just edit posts, sometimes delete posts, and sometimes we have to close the thread or even 'disappear' it. We hate doing that one, but each action is based on the individual thread being moderated and what is the minimum we can get away with doing instead of just closing it automatically or 'disappearing' it automatically.
We created the Romper Room so those threads that turned too serious or deep would have a home and could be kept off the general forums.
Personal attacks are still not allowed anywhere. Some became confused over this, and we are working to eliminate their confusion.
However, I do agree with you in that perhaps we were not as clear as we should have been on the Romper Room, and need some clearer rules to govern it.
We are working on it, and as always very appreciative of your input Fred, it is often of great help to us as we navigate forward.

That's what I was thinking......Growing Pains!

Feelings will get hurt ....

Something I've known for a long time is, no matter what "It" is there will always be someone who will take offense to "It", or be offended by "It", no matter if they have to work hard at finding something wrong with "It".

In short, there will always be someone to get pissed off at anything.

In this stance, unless there was a post removed the person 'leaving' hadn't even posted in the thread.

Seems to me that person wanted to be pissed off and AARP was only the excuse.

So now everyone has to walk around this place making sure not to brush up against another, being touchy feely and not make remarks or jokes that may possibly "irritate" someone, even in innocence?

Lets create another DC while we're at it.

.

Not until after 9pm tonight, LOL!! And I have to spread some more around in the meantime... so who is up first and what ya got to offer in exchange for Karma??

:yum::yum:
