The message carved by John F. Kennedy on the coconut shell read: "NAURO ISL… COMMANDER… NATIVE KNOWS POS'IT… HE CAN PILOT… 11 ALIVE… NEED SMALL BOAT… KENNEDY," conveying that an island native knew their location, could guide them, there were 11 survivors needing rescue, and they required a small boat. Kennedy carved this note in 1943, which two Solomon Islanders carried to Allied coast watchers, leading to the rescue of Kennedy and his PT-109 crew after their boat was sunk by a Japanese destroyer.
