Like the idea of a challenge. Sorry, didn't read through all the posts, but would like to see a seasonal ingredient featured. Luv tomatoes, but they are not at their peak during the winter. Perhaps we could take a poll? Would like to see squash as the Iron Chef ingredient.

Would like to be included/participate, but am digitally challenged. Will an original recipe suffice?

FWIW, one of my fave "tomato" recipes is Bittman's Tomato Paella.

CC, the ingredient for the challenge is picked randomly from the list that is posted. I believe squash is already on the list.......if you scroll upwards you'll see the list of ingredients that we've already done and the ones to be done...

As Homecook said, we add new ingredients to the list, then the Random Number Generator picks them from the existing list.

Current list for future Battles.

Squash = Item #12

Leeks = Item #17

When the number comes up, that is what we will cook.

Damn, that sounded prickish….sorry. I’m in editing mode trying to wrap up this latest book.

The thing with NCT’s Iron Chef is, we never know what the “Chairman” will throw at us. When you watch the show you never know what will be unveiled.

We try to do the same thing here by having a numbered list and then use a random number generator (RNG) to pick a number that corresponds to an item……that way it’s like the Chairman said “Here you go, cook it”.

The list is not static and can be added to at any time.

Simply post your ideas for an ingredient, any ingredient, and we add to the current working list.

This thread is dynamic, and typically all you need do is go to the LAST post and scroll up 1-2 posts to find the current working list. No need to read every post, just read the last 2 or 3 and you’re up to date.

The current list shows the Battles and Ingredients we have done in the past, and it also shows the open ingredients that we will face sometime in the future once the RNG (our digital Chairman) picks them.

Any and all suggestions can be added to the current working list at anytime, so always feel free to suggest a new ingredient.

Without your suggestions, this list will eventually reach its end!

Hope that helps!

I like the idea of squash and leeks coming up Keltin.
Can't think of anything else right now to add to the list tho. :(

IC31 is still open and will be for another few hours, but I wanted to go ahead and get the new ingredient out there.

Wow, I didn’t expect this to come up so soon!

The new ingredient is: Color - Green

Are we going to do a Christmas week like we did for Thanksgiving???

We can if everyone likes? It was a very fun thread.....but I've been lazy and daunted on how to do a Results version! Sorry! :doh:

If everyone agrees (or no one says Nay), then next week's IC willl be Battle Christmas 09!

Dang......I can't believe Christmas is only a week or so away!!! Wow.

I was just going over some of the older posts that I missed during my absence in November. Damn, this thread nearly blew itself apart. :w00t:

And it was all over the "rules" and semantics of what an ingredient is……AGAIN!

Yep, we already had that discussion. The first hint of confusion and resolution was back on May 18, in Post #23 by BAM.

http://www.netcookingtalk.com/forums/showpost.php?p=91617&postcount=23

Later, on July 24, in response to a question on what is an "Ingredient", Vera very eloquently said in Post #103:

It's on there the same way soup is on there...Bread's not really an ingredient, either...or Pizza....some things are ingredients, some things are center of the plate!

http://www.netcookingtalk.com/forums/showpost.php?p=122468&postcount=103

Bam followed up, and eventually (in post #121) I made a fairly philosophical post explaining the hows and whys of our "Ingredient" system.

http://www.netcookingtalk.com/forums/showpost.php?p=122526&postcount=121

In short, our ingredients are;

1. Singular ITEMS that can be made into a dish

--OR--

2. A DISH itself.

If an ITEM comes up, you pick a dish to make. If a DISH comes up, you pick the items to use. In doing this, we approach the challenge from BOTH angles.

When an ITEM comes up - we attack from the ITEM (ingredient) standpoint and challenge ourselves to make some kind of dish out of it.

When a DISH comes up - we attack from the DISH standpoint in that we must come up with items to make that particular DISH.

ITEM EXAMPLE: Ground Beef…..The dish you make = Meatloaf

DISH EXAMPLE: Meatloaf…….The item you used = Ground Turkey

Also, lest anyone think we have gone too far over the edge, Iron Chef America does indeed do a "Dish" type of challenge!

The first one that comes to mind was "Battle Farmer's Market". That was Season 5, Episode3: Cora vs. Guarnaschelli. Original Air Date - August 12, 2007.

In that episode, they basically brought every fresh item from the Farmer's Market into Kitchen Stadium, and the two Chef's just made whatever they wanted.

They have also done Battle Hamburger, Holiday Showdown, Thanksgiving Battle, and more.

So, we have not drifted from the "rules" of the Iron Chef show. Not at all……we are following their lead perfectly.

Hope that helps!

That's all fine and proper Keltin ; My problem with the thread, sorry to say, is where it says "Make Something, then post it" which pretty much means "Make something THIS WEEK"......................
I'm not going to bust my ass anymore, trying to be appetizing and entertaining, while some others just post something out of their archives...............so, as you may or may not have noticed, I don't participate anymore....

That breaks my heart LT:sad:
It never occured to me that anyone was posting out of their archives.:confused::shock:
Wouldn't that be considered cheating for those of us who have been having fun cooking?
Yes, I think so. :(

I agree that it should be made this week. I go through a lot of trouble arranging a submission on the week of the competition. Some weeks I don't make it and I don't post. That's the challenge. Otherwise, I could have half a dozen submissions by Monday morning for most challenges. That's not a challenge.

Majority of the challenges I could not and did not participate because I could not get to it that week or did not have said ingredient at the time....I could have many times posted old pics and recipes that went with the theme but that would have gone against the whole reason of the thread. Regardless of not often being able to participate, I always enjoy seeing what others do!
I don't see it being a constant issue of people using old dishes, few times I've seen it, it looked to me like they just simply didn't understand the premise of the thread.

I know what you're saying LT.

But, since it's all for fun and the betterment of the NCT community, it's hard to say someone is "disqualified" from something that never had any "real" qualifications.

There are many of us that take the IC seriously, and only post something we have made specifically that week for the IC. Personally, everything I've ever posted has been what I made that week just for the IC challenge (typically I made it the day I posted the pics).

I HAVE revisited recipes I've posted before (only twice), but those were only recipes that I posted way back before I had a camera and was posting pics. So those were basically updates for pics.

If a recipe of mine has been posted here before, and it has pics, I've never reused it. That is, I never post old pics, and I never use a recipe that already has pics.

There have been weeks when I didn't have the ingredient, and I didn't post. And there have been weeks where the ingredient was something I've done before, but I made something completely new. DW even asked once, "what about such & such you did a while back"….and I told her, it has to be new for IC and not reused.

So, I think a lot of us try to be new for the week. Heck, I know Vera takes being new seriously because on many occasions she has posted a dish the night before the new challenge comes out only to find that what she just made 24 hours ago is now this week's challenge. And even though many have said "Just go ahead and post it"…..she doesn't - she always strives to be new.

So please, by all means, continue to be new with us LT, and lets keep the challenges and great recipes pouring in! You're a big contributor to IC and recipes in general here, so please don't stop!

Battle Christmas '09 is fine with me.

BTW, I have never posted out of the archives for IC. I do think it takes the "challenge" out the the game. I'd rather see new stuff :brows:.

Thx for your thoughtful, and insightful post, K ;
I would only mention that I'm not looking to "Disqualify" any entries at all! Far be it from me to Dictate.....it's not in my nature.
I'm just not participating...........
