Oh! I like these kinds of threads! lol

Keltin, I sometimes use them for croutons.

More than once I've used them in a pinch when suddenly realizing I didn't have any burger buns!

Usually I throw them outside for the birdies to fight over.

Ever notice how tenacious the heels are, especially that front one. It's always jumping up and trying to get into your hand as you try to reach past it for the regular slices.

I usually leave the front heel in place and just reach around it, and in the end, I usually throw the heels into the trash, but occasionally throw them outside for the animals.

Hmmmm…..since I know beforehand the ultimate demise of the heel, I guess I should just chunk it at the start. But, I have, on occasion, actually eaten the heels when I was all set to have a sandwich and found there was nothing left but the heels.

When we bake bread I love the heals. They go first in that case.
On store bought bread, I reach past much like you described Keltin. At times I'll go to make a sandwich and have to settle for one regular slice and a heel.

Most often though, they get tossed, but not until the whole loaf is gone. We might to through a loaf of bread a week, but in a week if it's not all gone all the stale bread is tossed.

I don't even get to think about the heels. SousChef lays claim to all the end pieces in our house. I'd lose an arm if I tried to take one!

I keep the first heel until all the middle slices are gone. I tell myself that it protects the other bread. When all the middle is gone, the heels go into the trash. If I put the heels out for the birds/animals, it would be like baiting a hunting ground for my cat. He can sometimes catch birds and squirrels even when they're not distracted by free food.

I checked feed the animals, animals in this case being Cocker Spaniels, aka bread hounds!

I like the ends myself when toasted.

Anyway, the ends don't go to waste around here.

I'll use them for meatballs, and sometimes I'll use them for regular eating just like any other loaf slice.

I also like to keep them over the next available slice as added insurance the next good slice doesn't get stale.

I honestly can't remember the last time I bought a loaf of bread. Mostly I buy bagels, baguettes, rolls & buns. When I did, I threw the ends out.

Mine go straight into the food processor to make breadcrumbs and are kept in the freezer. If you don't process them too finely, they are almost like Panko.

Interesting! I thought someone out there might save the heels in a bag in the freezer and then use them once they had a bag full. Never thought about making breadcrumbs as you go. Do you toast the bread first. I made breadcrumbs once in a food processor, and I toasted the bread first.

I use them to butter fresh corn, just put a piece or two of butter on the bread side and lay the corn in the heal give it a turn and pass it to the next person.

Eat them with butter and honey or jelly. Sometimes, Poochie gets a treat, but usually I eat them.
Never toast 'em though, they get too toasty for my taste.

No, I never toast them first. The bread we eat is pretty sturdy, because it's usually bread I make myself. The other thing I do is eat them straight out of the oven, smothered with sweet cream butter. Yum. Sometimes I share with Jerry, if he's somewhere close by and can see what I'm doing.

My choice wasn't listed which is I turn them into bread crumbs for mixing with meatballs, meat loaf, crab cakes etc. Now my wife turns them with the soft side out and makes a sandwich out of them trying to fool me, which doesn't work by the way.

Making bread crumbs out of them would be option 2, Use them for cooking.

it depends on the type of loaf of bread. the heels from a rye, italian, french, or semolina bread are jealously fought over in my house, awaiting butter or s&p'd evoo. that's if they make it home.

but for a regular, store bought, rectangular loaf of bread, my birds get the heels, dined up and soaked in orange or grapefruit juice, or water.
