Retro Recipes

Chicken and Dumplings.

My mother used to make it, but her dumplings were the biscuits in a tube. Laid on top of the stew, not real dumplings. I’m not sure that she didn’t use a can of soup for the gravy either.

Mine was the real deal.

LOVE!!! I'm glad to see that the "rules" allow us to update the retro recipes a bit!

I went retro tonight, too, with American Chop Suey. My father adored it, but didn't like tomatoes so we made his without. I added tomato sauce this time and it was a particularly delicious batch!

But honestly, either way, it never disappoints. :Heart2:

I went retro - but with an update!

Remember tuna noodle casserole? Canned tuna, canned mushroom soup, handful of peas, topped with cheese or bread crumbs. Sometimes if you wanted to dress it up, you tossed in a can of mushrooms.

I made my own mushroom cream sauce, added porcini powder, sautéed fresh mushrooms, used an excellent mustard cheddar mixed with the breadcrumbs. And pole & line caught tuna.

Judy declared it excellent!

One thing that reoccurred in my childhood home was tuna casserole. Tuna, noodles, cream of mushroom soup, peas and carrots, and potato chips on top. Momma used shells when they came out for the noodles because that was FAN-CEE! Mom would add 1/2 can of whole milk to each of the two cans of soup. Top with the crushed chips and baked at 350 degrees Fahrenheit until it was bubbly.

Here are some older photos of what I made yesterday.

Going through some cookbooks today and found my Great Aunt Wilma's 1938 Household Searchlight Recipe Book.
Here's a sample of the "Closed Sandwiches" page lol View attachment 83626

I was recently involved in a discussion about buttering bread for sandwiches (was it here?). Many of the recipes in your book say to do that, and it's the way I grew up. I don't do it, but I miss it! Makes everything better!

We do on occasion and my Scottish bd in BC does when we’d make sandwiches for our ocean fishing trips.
