Pepper Grinders

I need to purchase a pepper grinder. I have a cruddy cheap one that I bought several years ago and it does not work very well. I would like to buy a new one, but would like to get one that will last and does a great job at producing different types of grind. So please tell me or even provide links to what you think is the best.

TIA!

Is it for counter or table? I use one of these for cooking PepperMate white ceramic pepper mill . And I have an OXO salt and pepper set like these [ame="http://www.amazon.com/OXO-Good-Grips-Salt-Pepper/dp/B00004OCJD"]Amazon.com: OXO Good Grips Salt and Pepper Set: Kitchen & Dining[/ame]but they seem to not be very available now. They are casual, but the pepper mill is excellent, and grinds from fine as dust to a very coarse cracked.

I have a Perfex Pepper Mill that my friend, Andy bought me as a present. It is the best one I have ever owned and I highly recommend it. It is easy to fill, easy to grind and to set the ground.
See. http://tinyurl.com/czahyz (Wms Sonoma)

They also make a salt mill.

I highly recommend [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Unicorn-Magnum-Plus-Pepper-Mill/dp/B0000CFB4N/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1235131919&sr=8-1"]this one[/ame]
It has a very even grind, a nice big hole for filling (which doesn't affect your setting) and you get a lot of pepper/grind. The only fault, which could be eliminated if I paid attention, is that the twisting motion will open the fill hole if your hand isn't postioned just right. IMO, they would have been better off making the sleeve that opens the hole rotate in the other direction.

I have wanted one of these for a long time, it is next up on my list. Fruggy used to have one of these I think.

I have several that we have accumulated over the years all of which have ways to adjust the grinds. The latest one we got a stainless salt and pepper grinder that they sell at Bed, Bath & Beyond though I have no idea buy who. These seem to be really nice but got them as a gift from kids.

i collect peppermills... thrift stores, yard sales, and gifts

the biggest thing you have to check out is to make sure the grinder portion of it is made of metal. if it is not, then i dont recommend buying it.

i have sizes ranging from 5" mini pocket grinder to a 4ft grinder.

this is my favorite "toy" one because it has a light on and lights up everytime i push the grind button..lol

Yes, chow, I read somewhere that this one was the most highly rated by .... someone? Consumer Reports? America's Test Kitchen? Anyway, it's the one I've been wanting for years.

I just don't want to spend the money.

Although I think it is certainly worth it, the price is a little steep. If you are looking for something a bit cheaper, I read that Cooks Illustrated/America's Test Kitchen also recommends the "Oxo Grind It" and the "Zyliss Large Pepper Mill" as good buys.

something i read online

I'm so glad you brought this up sattie! I've been looking for a peppermill for a long time and am at a loss as to which type to get - plus some are so expensive

I have one of those battery powered mills where you push a button and it comes out, similar but taller than the one BBQ posted up above.

My favorite one is a "Nantucket Pepper Mill"....similar to the one in this pic. I have big hands, so squeezing the two handles together works well for me....it can really crank out the volume when needed.

Someone gave me a set of those, cat. The peppermill stopped grinding after 2 yrs of use. I didn't take it apart to see what might have broken, but the handle moved freely without any type of grinding action.

I know it's not what your looking for but I use an old (OLD) Moulinex coffee grinder.

What can I say? I had a Mr. Dudly (???) years ago, they were suppose to be good, it wasn't.

And I really do choke when it comes to spending money.

I have an OXO, I have had it for at least 5 years, maybe 8. Still goin strong. DW hates fresh ground, os it is just for me.

sattie, my mom had a plexiglass one that cracked when it fell on the floor. The bottom was a peppermill and the top was a salt shaker. I highly recommend that you avoid something like that.
If you buy a decent one, it will last a lifetime.

I have some fancy Alessi one that never worked right from day one... not even sure where it is now it was a gift.

I find that these things always break. I will probably just get a cheap one.

right now I have been using this stupid microplane hand crank thingy... what a PITA. Complete trash.

Probably a lot of different brands out there...as with anything mechanical, lots of different grades and quality. (just look at garlic presses...some last a lifetime, others bend and snap in weeks)

I'm going on maybe 10 years on mine right now. And under heavy use. (just used it again tonight making Chicken Adobo right now)

I have the perfect garlic press, the side of a Chinese cleaver is perfect. One wack and you have crushed garlic instantly.

Mine was made by Unicorn, the same maker of the Magnum. I did like the one hand operation.

WOW! Thanks for all the replies, sorry I have been absent today, but work has had me busy today.

It would be both for the table and cooking. I'm about the only one that likes fresh ground pepper on my food, DH perfers the fine powder stuff which I keep on hand for him.

Again, thanks for all links and suggestions... I'm off to explore!

We've had this William Bounds grinder for almost 10 years. It gets used several times a day nearly every day and has never failed us. It has ceramic grinders. About a year ago the little knob broke off the handle. Called the company and within two days a replacement, plus one was in the mailbox. No charge. We love it and it grinds either fine, medium or coarse.

I dont recommend you use that as a flashlight though

Hate to dig this up, but this past weekend I did purchase myself a pepper mill. I ended up getting a bamboo grinder (which is a highly renewable resource) that ran $29.99, then a $10 off coupon. I'm quite happy with it. After looking at all the links you kind folks provided, I was amazed at all the different types of peppermills out there.

That being said, I need to start a thread for a countertop electric grill!!!
