Fisher's Mom
Mother Superior
The members have spoken and the newest NCT Member Spotlight is QSis, who graciously accepted and gave us a little a peek into her life. Thanks, Lee!

Tell us a little about yourself - your family or household, kids, pets, occupation, etc.
I have never been married. Have had many boyfriends and have been deeply in love a several times (is that not the BEST feeling in the world???), but marriage was not in the cards. I have never wanted to have children.
I have a teeny family, which mainly consists of seniors: my only-child father and my beloved stepmother, and my mother and her only sister. This past week, I have just moved BOTH my mother and aunt into an assisted living facility, since they both have dementia. A rough time in all our lives.
My brother Rob, shares a townhouse with me. He was just staying here temporarily until he got on his feet after his divorce. That was 21 years ago. LOL! It’s worked out great, though, since we are just a year apart, have many of the same interests and friends, and get along well. Most of the time, anyway. Rob has one son, Beau, 24, who is, at the moment, estranged from us.
I think most of you know my 12 –year-old cat, Bud. He’s the light of my life, and the recipient of any maternal instinct I have.
I went to college at UMass, Amherst, which I adored, and from which I graduated with a BS in Psychology. The education and degree came in handy as a production manager and as an HR Manager at Polaroid for 25 years, before being laid off, along with the rest of company.
I’m now the store manager for the Ace Hardware store in my hometown.

What part of the world do you live in?
I live a stone-throw’s north of Boston, about 15 minutes away, but only because of traffic.
How did you find the NCT community?
I followed chowhound (aka Pacanis) here from DC.
Do you have any hobbies besides cooking?
My brother and I cooked competition barbecue for 10 years, and did quite well, while making a lot of friends and a little money. We are retired from that now and just cook Q in the backyard.
I’ve been a container gardener for 20 years. I live on a ledge so everything I grow has to be in a container.
I am a Red Sox fan. Not really a hobby, it’s a cross we have to bear.
I love to hunt for mushrooms in the woods, and I adore reading on the beach. If that’s not a hobby, it SHOULD be!

Give us 5 words that describe you.
Conscientious, honest, trusting, direct, curious
Tell us one thing about yourself that people would be surprised to know.
This is SUCH a cool question! Um, hmmph, well, let me see. Oh, I have a good singing voice. I sang in choirs and choruses most of my life, and was a featured soloist, too.

How and at what age did you start cooking?
My parents divorced when I was 8 and I lived with my father and brother. I started making a few things as a child, and someone gave me a Betty Crocker cookbook. I discovered, to my delight, that to cook, all you needed to be able to do is READ!!
Do you have a signature dish or one that you make especially well?
My mother’s baked chicken leg quarters!!!
Shake the legs in a bag with some flour, set them on a foiled, Pammed cookie sheet on which an entire head of garlic cloves (separated) has been placed. Season the legs with Bell’s poultry seasoning and seasoned salt. Put a small pat of butter and some celery leaves on each leg. Bake at 350 for an hour and 15 minutes.
I make chicken wings this way, too, only bake for an hour! My FAVORITE!!!
What is your favorite spice?
Oh man, SALT! Hands down!
What is your favorite restaurant meal?
Fish and chips, I think. I hate making it, but love eating it.
What would your last meal be if you could choose anything at all?
My mother’s chicken legs, white rice and steamed Brussels sprouts. Lots of butter.
If you could host a dinner party with 6 well-known guests, living or dead, who would they be and what would you serve?
- Jesus, Mary and Joseph. I want to say, “Okay, tell me everything and be HONEST”.
- Grouch Marx and Johnny Carson, the two quickest-witted people I’ve ever seen.
- Robert Urich, the celebrity love of my life (Spenser for Hire). I’d be all over him like white on rice.
LOL! What a group!
I’d serve tapas, because I love finger food, and I’d be too into the company to mess with a formal dinner. As far as dessert goes, I’d kick the others out and Bob would be mine.
If you were going to be stranded on an isolated island for a year, what 6 foods would you want to have to readily available?
BACON!!!!, bread, Cape Cod potato chips, peanut M and M’s, Miller Lite (that counts as a food, right?), chicken wings.
Who would you most like to prepare a meal for and why. What would you serve?
You know, I’d like to prepare a Christmas meal for a group of lonely people and/or people in need. My mother and aunt used to help serve Christmas Day dinner in local soup kitchen and they got so much out of it. I’d like to cook the meal – roast beef, mashed potatoes and gravy, rolls, vegs, pies.

Who would you most like to have prepare a meal for you?
Chowhound, I think. That man packs each meal with enough fat and carbs to make Paula Deen blush! It all looks so GOOD and so BAD! LOL!
100 years from now, how would you like to be remembered?
Well, I’d better get cracking and do something significant, since I’m on track to be unremembered dust in the wind (I love that song, BTW).
(an aside: There’s a cemetery by my house with this quote engraved on it, “See ya later!” Isn’t that cool?)

Anything else you'd like to tell us about yourself?
Yes. I am astonished that NCT members voted to spotlight me!
A little story: I had just graduated from college and I got my first car, a used Plymouth Duster. I was SO excited! I couldn’t wait to get to work to tell my co-worker all about it. All I got out of my mouth was “Dolores, I got my first CAR!”. She said, “Oh, good for you. My daughter just bought a brand new Cadillac with all the bells and whistles ...” and she went on and on about her daughter’s shiny new car.
From that day on, I realized that most people want to steer conversations to themselves; they want to talk, not listen.
Knowing that, I don’t waste my breath saying much about myself unless I’m answering a direct question, or unless I am talking with a good friend who is truly interested.
So, thank you, NCT members, for your interest, and for listening. I am deeply honored.
