Irene Near You?.. Prepared??

Hi...

It is obvious that on the East Coast end...we are some how going to see some workings of Mother Nature (Irene ).

They say according to the Forcast on TV and weather centers, that it should hit New Jersey by Saturday at around + - 6:00 PM.

I have to run some cords to the generator just in case of power outage. We are like 56 miles inland; so it just will be a rain event.

Today was forcast for violent storms and tropical rains coming from the west...but if that is the way they are forcasting this "Irene" storm, then it will be a puppy! We got a sprinkle today twice, and a sun shine for like 3 hours, and then cloudy.

I will lash down the deck furniture tomorrow..and any other loose items like the Garbage cans from flying away into the Land of Oz. LOL

We are stocked up on Milk and Eggs. Bread is ok too.

DW is down South Jersey inland from Atlantic City by 23 miles, and Cape may by like 40. She will be on the road at around 1 PM tomorrow.
I told her to expect road tie ups if the people are evacuating.
The Governor asked for a state of emergency, and evacuation of the direct coastal inhabitants on the Oceanfront area's.

Everyone stay safe, and prepare as much as possible. Have water for drinking in case of utility problems.

Be careful with candles and burning lamps if in use.
Don't forget...Water and Electricity Don't Mix!

So...Are you? in the path..or on the projected path of this storm?

I pray it veers off land eastward, and powers down.

Im a couple hours inland from the coast, we might get an inch of rain and 50 MPH winds.

Which means that I have a big pile of stuff to move from my deck to my garden shed.
yee. haw.

Hope everyone on the coast comes through OK!

Oh, don't forget cash in your hurricane emergency kit. No power means no credit cards, usually.

My son and his wife and child are in Virginia Beach... and I'm worried sick.

I've got three cousins and an aunt in the same area along with a good friend. They're all planning on just hunkering down. They've been through it before but they're all scared....

Carolina Cooking is in her path..worry about her too....
Here, on the coast,Boston area, will probably be wind and some rain..We always seem to lose power with storms....I have extra batteries:good:, and always have water..Sat will be a very busy day...errands, cooking, laundry--all done in one day--just in case..hope it 'fizzles' out when it arrives in this area...already tied down my balcony stuff...
worried about the people down south...
take care all

I'm a little nervous about it, although we're as prepared as we can be. We have enough food and water for a couple of weeks, for us and the pets; a generator and extra gas; a gas grill with an extra tank; and a gas stove and water heater in the house. We have prescriptions, first-aid kit, tarp, and tape.

We'll pick up a few last things today and should be good to go. My plan is to get some heirloom tomatoes and bell peppers from the farmer's market and spend tomorrow making salsa and tomato sauce. I also have a watermelon for more pickled watermelon rinds.

This house has stood for over 100 years through many storms, so I think we'll be all right. Hope you and yours will be, too.

I saw a news report last night, and they interviewed some hurricane expert in New York. Please! New Yorkers! I'm not saying this - I just thought it was funny when he said it.

To paraphrase:

Q: What's your biggest concern in preparing for this hurricane.

A: New Yorkers. They wont listen. You can tell a New Yorker anything, but you can't tell him much!

Aside from all the things already mentioned:

Fill your gas tank.
1. If gas stations lose power, you can't/won't be able to get any for maybe days.
2. If you have to evac. it may well be awhile before you see gas avail. as everyone else evac-ing has beaten you to it.
3. It gives additional weight to your vehicle.

If you have a light-weight vehicle, you may want to purchase sand or gravel to put in the trunk/car, bed/truck.

Taping windows doesn't really work and the adhesive left behind is a pain to get off.
(but if you do tape and have adhesive problem-WD-40 is great for getting it off.)

Fill bathtub(s) with water. This is good for many reasons. If you have well water and you lose electricity, you won't be able to manually flush toilet. You'll have to use the "bucket method".
Or, if your neighborhood has burst mains, you'll need water for washing this or that.

Also, when stocking supplies enough for at least 3 days after the storm, don't forget water enough for you and pets, and pet food.

And purchase extra bleach. If you get flooding in your area, lots of contaminants after things settle down. You can also use it to purify water for drinking. (Check online for exact formula-I can't remember ratio)

Collect important papers; ie, insurance(s), medical, pet, etc. and put in water-tight container and store with your emergency supply kit.

Clear out an inner closet for your family, including pets, to enter if you've waited too late to evac.

Lots more, but I can't think right now.
(I've survived 2 minor-cat. 2, & 1 major-cat. 5-Wilma-2005, enough to know there's never talk of being too prepared.)

Be safe ALL.
It was great being back here. Hope to be back more regularly soon.

Great to see you, Calicolady! It's been way too long.

:agree:Good advice. A few more things here, from someone's who's also been through a couple of 'regular' hurricanes - but never a 'major'.

*Get cash now. The credit & debit card system will not work during a power outage.

*If you have empty space in your freezer, freeze water bottles. Just make sure to remove some water from the top of the bottles first. This does 2 things. One, a fully packed freezer will stay cold longer than a half empty one. Two, the ice and the extra drinking water will come in handy later.

*Bring any lawn furniture, grill, yard decorations, bird feeders, etc., INSIDE! Tying down is pretty useless in a hurricane. Cars and boats can be upturned. Don't count on a rope to hold things down. Remember, the concern here is not so much losing your grill. It's about the objects becoming projectiles. Loose furniture blowing around in a storm causes much damage & injury.

*If you are told to evacuate - DO IT! My brother & one of his sons decided to ride out Andrew. Afterward, Mr. Macho Man said he'd never be that stupid again. If you have been told to evacuate, and you get in trouble during the storm - you are on your own! No one will come rescue you after the evac deadline.

*I hear people stocking up on milk & eggs. Those things are not going to be of any use to you. If the power's out, you don't want to open that fridge. Don't bother stocking up the fridge. Unless you have a generator, if the power's out for a couple days, you're going to lose it all anyhow. What you need is water - and lots of it. Plan on at least 3 gallons per person to get you through 3 days. The stuff in the bathtub is not for drinking - it's for other needs. You need clean drinking water. You also need foods that do not need refrigeration and do not need cooking. Canned tuna. Peanut butter. Canned beans. Stuff that if you're hungry, you can eat cold. Just make sure you have a non-electric can opener!!! Get yourself a big platter of bananas, apples, etc. They don't have to be refrigerated, and you can eat them without any prep. After a 'cane, you'll be too busy to want to be messing with trying to prepare food.

*Make sure you have paper plates & plastic utensils. You don't want to be washing dishes if your water supply is limited.

*Make sure the propane tanks for your grill are full. If you use charcoal, bring it inside so it stays dry. Plenty of matches. Newspaper. Your grill could be the only want to cook for a while. It will also permit you to boil water if you need to.

*Have one telephone that is an old fashioned plug in phone, not a portable. Not always useful, but if your phone lines are up before the electricity, you'll be able to use the phone. Portables only work if both the phone & electric lines are intact.

The latest word is that if you are trying to contact loved ones, TEXT, don't call. Texting uses much less bandwidth and doesn't jam up the lines like voice calls do. If everyone spreads the word, then there will be fewer problems with communication afterword.

Do all this stuff now. Don't wait until tomorrow. The store shelves will be empty. You'll be rushed. You won't get it all done.

This is a big storm. Last night we got some of the fringe feeder bands through here. The storm was over the Bahamas, and we caught the edge of it in Tampa Bay. That's big! Don't pay attention to that single line on the forecasts. Look at the entire size of it. Whether the eye crosses your town or not, you will get a storm.

This isn't a picnic. It's a hurricane. The only good thing I can say is that unlike a tornado or an earthquake, you have time to prepare. You can come out the other side in one piece if you're smart.

All good, SS. Yes and very important.
Also, take pics of your house & property NOW. It makes it much easier after the storm & any damage to prove said damage.
I love the phone info. My folks lost phone for 9 days after Wilma. I didn't because I kept my old "plug in". Cell phones don't work during & after either as the satalites are blocked out because of the storm.

Regarding communication. Set up an out of area contact you can contact after the storm to let them know you're alright. And an aproximate time range they can expect you to call. Say 24 hours after the storm passes your region.

Good thing to do...NOW ! >> Get Gas in your car or for your Generator.

The wife called from South Jersey this morning, and had to drive to the 4th gas station to get gas. The lines were backed up on the street, and she is 23 miles inland from Atlantic City.

This morning DD went to the local ShopRite..and there wasn't a shopping cart to be found.

I will say one thing...outside looks and feels like "The Calm Before The Storm!"

Truthfully...I would rather a Blizzard of a Snowstorm instead of this hurricane stuff. .....At least with that..we could make and eat snow cones!

Be safe everyone.
To all those who have friends or relatives in the storm's path, here's hoping they fare well.

The birds are eerily missing......no sparrows, black birds, cardinals, jays.......and just a few seagulls...it is eerie..tis started yesterday....but really astonishing this morning........sunshine when I got up at 7am, now cloud cover and getting darker.....better get my butt in gear and do my errands....yikes---and they say we are getting a tropical storm-cat 1 hurricane...i dunno...this is at the northeast coast 4 blocks from beach...washing my 4th batch of clothes now....yikes.........:umbrella::umbrella::umbrella::umbrella::umbrella:

It's pouring now. Police are telling people to evacuate but we have nowhere to go so I guess we are going to ride it out.

In my thoughts and prayers East Coast friends! Stay safe, and I'll be praying you get no damage!
The mayor of Hoboken is shutting the town down. After 8PM NO alcohol will be served ANYWHERE public so no hurricane parties, AND NO driving in town after 8PM.

Stay safe everyone!

I've got friends and relatives in VA Beach and Norfolk that are getting slammed. Winds are already over 50 MPH and the eye hasn't even hit landfall yet. They're bracing for this afternoon when it really hits! It's the lull before the real storm....

"T" just got a call from her Uncle inland from Atlantic City NJ, and he said it's pouring rain only. Heavy.

Here ...60 or so miles inland..it's steamy / gray / had a few sprinkles of rain, and now Calm / not a leaf waving....and getting bright a little / like hazy.
Temp is 75ºF..

Just got the scoop from the TV weather channel for the area here.

Tropical Storm Warning in Effect.. That's better than hurricane force storm!

It is supposedly gonna rain though..?? ( It Better ) LOL

No sign of anything here at ..12:51 .... Actually..sun is trying to peek through.

It is now 77º ... Looks like Midnight till 6 am we're gonna have some heavy rain.

Poor baby...she lives right on the river. She said it is just below normal for now.

They have no basement thank God!..

It stopped raining for about 1/2 hour now it's pouring again.

My husband is a former Navy meteorologist; this is his favorite storm-tracking site: http://www.stormpulse.com/hurricane-irene-2011

In the box on the right, you can click options to see radar, forecast models, etc. Click on More and select the wind fields - it shows you what the winds will be and where.

Remember that a hurricane is a heavy rain and wind event, it can kick up tornadoes, and it's very wide - right now, hurricane-force winds extend 90 miles outward from the eye. And it consists of bands of wind and rain, so they will get heavier and lighter over time - that doesn't mean it's over. In particular, if the eye is over where you are, the weather will get very calm, but only briefly - as the storm continues to move, the winds and rain will pick up again, rapidly.

If you're in the path, please take all the precautions SS mentioned. I've lived in this area for 26 years and have not been through a storm this big. Our house has, though, so we feel pretty good about that  We stocked up on food, water, gas, liquor, etc., on Wednesday. We were here for Hurricane Isabel in 2003, but by the time she got here, the winds had fallen, so she was a tropical storm. She still knocked out power for hundreds of thousands of people, knocked down hundreds of trees, and we were without water for five days.

Embryodad, your weather sounds like what we had yesterday. Irene is still centered in North Carolina. It will move off the coast this afternoon, over water again, which will cause it to strengthen as it moves northwest. i have no doubt your tropical storm warning will be upgraded to a hurricane warning later.

Take care, everyone.

My sister has....had?....a second home (mobile home) in Beaufort, NC pretty much where the thing made landfall. I sure am glad she wasn't there.

Looks like Irene is passing right over Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, NC. I'm sure glad I no longer live there....
