Saw those. I just can't fathom a reason to subject myself to that kind of pain. Marriage is bad enough!!!

Okay, YeOldeStoneCat and BT, you guys talk about pain. Why would anyone in the world want to subject themselves to PAIN while eating and then again the next day?

I do not get it. I understand that some level of heat elicits some sort of rush, but PAIN???

Is it all macho schtick?

Eating hot peppers causes an endorphin release and rush. One of the most addictive feel goods there is.

I will concede to the macho schtick thing. :brows: A competition of toughness. Guys have this innate quality (or lack of) to compete with each other.

And...like Keltin mentioned above...the release of endomorphins is kinda cool. Combine that with a lot of wine that I have at these contests...and...weeeeeee!

I started out doing them, a client of ours is a really big high end catering company, and they have a yearly Chile festival every autumn. A big social event for staff 'n family, and friends and family of theirs. Part of some of the festivities are a chili competition (which I won the one time I entered, I made a huge pot of chili based on chef Paul Prudhommes "Texas Red" recipe), and a hot pepper eating contest. I won that 3x years straight...and it comes with a cash reward! Plus the trophy is a nice display for a pepper head to sport in their kitchen.

But as I'm getting older....it is a lot to subject the body to. Participating in those hot pepper eating contests does take a toll on the body...aside from the burn of the mouth during and briefly after the contest, the gut will hurt for the rest of the night, sometimes a little puking..which burns again..and of course the next morning pain while you evacuate.

A tip I'll pass along for any of those who want to try one out..don't chew the peppers a lot, as many know, it's the membrane lining on the inside of the peppers which contains the most heat. Usually the peppers are served to you whole..on a plate. I bite it off from the stem...very loosely and briefly chew them just enough to bring to manageable sizes to quickly swallow.

You guys are nuts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:bb: :puke1: :dizzy:

I'm sure you can get a neat looking trophy at a garage sale!!! :yum::yum::yum::yum:

i don't really go for the insanity pepper stuff. i only eat that kind of heat on certain occasions. you have to be in the mood for it. i just mentioned the pain thing 'cause i saw a good science show about hot peppers.

otherwise, the heat factor for me is a relative perspective kinda thing. i eat food that i don't think is very hot, but other people have commented that it was HOT. i guess you just get used to it over time. but i know people who think my heat level is wimpy. so, there ya go.

being introspective, maybe it is a male thing in kind of a way (macho schtick? :glare:). my dad was one who loved hot mustard and pickled hot peppers, and he passed that love down to me as a father/son kinda thing, seperate from all of my sisters. same thing with cheeses, and beer.

i had a good hot pepper experience last night at a malaysian restaurant. i've asked the waitresses before if i could have some extra dried hot chili flakes with my order, but they've always said that they only had hot sauce, no dried peppers, so i just get that.
but i asked the bartender last night what kind of pepper do they use to make their dishes hot, and he explained that they don't use dried peppers but rather fresh thai chilis. then, he went to the kitchen and got me a container of chopped, green, thai bird peppers as well as hot sauce.

they were awesome!!! although, i think the kitchen took it easy on me as they weren't as hot as i was expecting. they probably have worse back there.

the thai birds were beautiful scattered over my order of beef ayam rendang, sort of a thick thai beef stew, that was fantastic by itself! we'll be going back more often in the future, i'm sure.

Re: Hot (spicey) foods (Poll)

There's just no point to that IMO, unless you're being evil against someone.
You're my kinda guy, StoneCat. :respect:

I agree this must be kind of a man thing. I chose medium because I enjoy some heat in certain foods, but not enough to hurt. Tortilla chips and a nice, medium hot salsa with a huge glass of unsweet iced tea - heavenly!!
