i don't really go for the insanity pepper stuff. i only eat that kind of heat on certain occasions. you have to be in the mood for it. i just mentioned the pain thing 'cause i saw a good science show about hot peppers.
otherwise, the heat factor for me is a relative perspective kinda thing. i eat food that i don't think is very hot, but other people have commented that it was HOT. i guess you just get used to it over time. but i know people who think my heat level is wimpy. so, there ya go.
being introspective, maybe it
is a male thing in kind of a way (macho schtick?
). my dad was one who loved hot mustard and pickled hot peppers, and he passed that love down to me as a father/son kinda thing, seperate from all of my sisters. same thing with cheeses, and beer.
i had a good hot pepper experience last night at a malaysian restaurant. i've asked the waitresses before if i could have some extra dried hot chili flakes with my order, but they've always said that they only had hot sauce, no dried peppers, so i just get that.
but i asked the bartender last night what kind of pepper do they use to make their dishes hot, and he explained that they don't use dried peppers but rather fresh thai chilis. then, he went to the kitchen and got me a container of chopped, green, thai bird peppers as well as hot sauce.
they were awesome!!! although, i think the kitchen took it easy on me as they weren't as hot as i was expecting. they probably have worse back there.
the thai birds were beautiful scattered over my order of beef ayam rendang, sort of a thick thai beef stew, that was fantastic by itself! we'll be going back more often in the future, i'm sure.
