Most cans are the No 303 and the No 2 can which is about 16 ounces
of stuff, but I agree it helps to know what size can the food is
commanly sold in.

I always found this interesting because as growing up I worked in a Red Owl and was expected to learn this because of the older folks that still thought in terms of numbered cans. A lot of recipes in older cook books call for can sizes.

Now everything is in ounces in the US, everywhere else metric.

yeah. it's loverly. yo' working up a recipe calling for 2 cups of X - you get to the market and the can says "14.75 ounces / 420 grams"

right.

one of three countries left on the planet that does not do metric - and they still can get their volume vs mass act together.

. . . . with the exception of shredded cheese packages. the manuf' has apparently adjusted the shred size so the"std package ounces" = 1 or 2 cups, as noted on the label.

which makes me not a lot - I could probably put four cups of shredded cheese on a two cup recipe pizza and not notice.

American cans and bottles now have metric in parentheses. All liquor is metric.

Even that has its exceptions. Liquor at duty free shops is sold in quarts.

The reason? 5 750 ml bottles work out to a few hundredths oz over a gallon. Meaning that you can only get 4 bottles through customs.
