Anyone know anything about washing machines?

I’ll agree with Bam here. It sounds like something in the timer is bad. The timer is more than just a time keeper, it also turns on the various cycles at the right times. Sounds like something is wrong with your timer (contacts, burnt wires, etc).

That seems to be the opinion of most here, so that is probably what it is! Guess it's washing machine shopping time. Dangit!

If that is the only problem with the washing machine, IE everything else works and ran good before this problem, then I would check a local appliance repair store to see what the cost would be on it.
Might be better to fix it, or might be better to buy a good used one. Just be careful on the used ones, you might end up with the same problem if it is fairly old so try and stick to newer ones or ones with a repair record to show it is in good working shape.

from bad experiences on buying used washers, we now ask if they(the seller) would mind us running a quick cycle of water through the machine... if they dont want you to, walk no run away....

Thanks Maverick!

That's another great idea, thanks!

That's a good tip, Peggy. Here in SA, it's standard for the seller to do this. Especially with freezers and refrigerators - they are plugged in and running when you go to pick them up so you can see that they work.

Cool! My old (30+ year old) clothes dryer burnt out and I just replaced it with a new one. Seems like I have had to buy new appliances of late.
Good luck with your repairs.

Thanks, Guess I'm going to have to go shopping now! At least I am prepared due to all the help everyone here has given me!

Hate you had to replace it, but 30 years is a great track record, they sure don't make them like that anymore! Having to buy appliances is not any fun, much less all the $$$$ What brand was yours?

I know this is a small matter, but a friend of mine bought a new coffee pot about 6 months ago, and already had to buy a new one!

Woooohooo! Just bought a brand new whirlpool for $125.00 from a friend of a friend!!!! I'll post pics when I get it up and running! Thanks for everyone's help!!

Oh well, the deal for the washer fell through. They guy who was selling it had moved out of his place and had left it there to get later. Well, looks like someone came and took it! Back to the want ads! Boo hoo!

Well CARP!!! So sorry to hear that! Probably meant to be though. A better deal on a better machine is just around the corner!

Thanks Keltin, man, I just knew I'd be up all night washing, lol! You're right, something better will come along, at least the dryer still works. I CAN wash things by hand for a while, even though it isn't any fun. Have a few places I can go if when I have to, but I hate doing that.

Yeah, I used to hate dragging my wash out on the weekends. But you know, you can have some fun with it. I sued to go to a washeteria near a bunch of antique shops. I’d always forget my wash and get lost in the shops. It can have some up sides if you make the best of it!

That's a thought Keltin, I love antique shops.

I'm sorry! If your machine is old it's probably in need of beeing replaced

Yeah, it needs to be replaced, only because my son tried to fix one small problem. He left wires exposed, and when the water hit them, it fried out other big important parts! Yep, that's why I've been looking for another.

Too bad you can't get some wiring schematics for it. If the timer moves but nothing happens until the spin cycle, it might be the leads under the timer. They could have gotten scorched by the short and are no longer making contact.
If the timer doesn't move, can you move it by hand and make it work? Barring that, check where the sparks happened, those leads may be scorched and no longer making contact as well.
Sometimes just replacing the wires in this situation will solve the problem.

Thanks Maverick, it for sure is probably the timer or the leads/wires to it, and also maybe something else, as some have said, the water level switch. Okay, here is what happens when I pull out the knob on the timer in the wash cycle: Nothing. No noise at all, the water won't fill, on the wash or the rinse cycle. When I put it on the spin cycle, it does put out a little water and will spin. As in normally after it drains, then it puts out that little bit of water to spin? If it has water in it, it will drain also. It just will not fill up with water nor agitate on the wash or rinse cycle. I've been trying to take the top off all day to get to the timer to see if the leads/wires are scorched, but can't figure it out. I've taken the knob off the timer, which is the ONLY knob on this washer. It's old, small, and a bare bones washing machine. I have also taken the two screws on each side out near the top on the back, that appear to hold plastic clips. I'm sure there must be some hidden screws somewhere, but can not find them, lol! I just really hate to go get another washer, if all this is just wires! But, it looks like that is what i am going to have to do! Still looking for a good deal on one. Thanks so much again, for all of y'alls help!
