Whats on the menu for Labor Day 9/6/10?

lilbopeep

🌹 Still trying to get it right.
I have ground beef, hot dogs, steak and ribs.

Are you cooking today or going to a cookout?

Amazingly enough, same here, Mr. GJ...and I left Oregon to come to Mexico to get away from the rain! Overcast, mid-70s, more rain coming. Bridges washing out, highways blocked by slides and local streets flooded. Guess we'll stay home. I might make a pot of charro beans.

A jug of Simply Limeade, a can of salt and pepper mixed nuts, a small thermos of tomato soup.
Oh and coffee, there will be lots of coffee today.
Today is the carry in at work.

I'm taking a sweet Hawaiian bread bowl with spinach dip to contribute to the spread, but doubt I'll feel like eating much of anything.

We're going into the Quarter this afternoon to listen to some jazz outside Cafe duMonde..

Then, home for grilled TBones, tortellini salad and corn on the cob.

Karen, Farmer's Almanac is calling for a mild but very wet winter in the PNW. Rain in early September is at best a rarity as you well know. Could be a self fulfilling prediction.

Hey, Vera - got a recipe for the tortellini salad? I made one recently, but didn't really like how it turned out.

I'll be marinating a London broil in Mexican seasonings and lime juice and making Bobby Flay's Southwestern potato salad to go with it. Probably a green salad, too.

Going to do something a little different this year.

Bulgogi, sesame noodles, rice & cucumber salad. Coconut ice cream for dessert.
 I found a great sesame noodle recipe and have become addicted to them!! LOL
Coconut ice cream!! I have never had that but I love coconut!!

It's not really a recipe but I'll tell you what I do...

Cook the cheese tortellini according to package instructions. During the last minute of cooking, add a diced carrot and a diced celery stalk. Put a little less than a 1/4C diced red onion into the colander. Drain the pasta, carrots and celery over the onions. (this softens the carrots and celery a bit, and takes a bit of the bitterness off the raw onion.) I add sliced black olives, diced sun dried tomatoes (the kind packed in olive oil) and about 1/2 C frozen peas (don't bother defrosting). I blend all this with olive oil, red vinegar, Salt and pepper, a little granulated garlic and 1/3 C grated cheese. Toss in about 8 leaves of chopped basil. Chill.

You can add diced red pepper or broccoli florets too. I would if I'd had them.

Give it a try, tell me what you think!

Luv those sesame noodles. Peeps, will you share your recipe? Some of the Thai restaurants serve coconut ice cream - it's delish, & easy to make at home.

GG, I have a layered tortellini salad recipe with artichoke hearts, black olives, feta cheese, etc., etc. - ask if you want - or I will post when I can.

Yes, yes, yes - please share your recipe for sesame noodles. We've all had the chance to look at them, and they look SO good. I would love the recipe - thanks!

Thank you Karen. Ok I need to rework it a bit because I have been playing with the recipe and I think I got it just about right. Give me a few minutes. Then I need to find the proper forum to post it in.

Ok posted here > Peep's Sesame Noodles

I'm vacillating between steaks and ribs. Got a care package of Gates BBQ sauce, direct from St Louis, so I'm leaning toward ribs.....

It's pouring down rain here, and we are becoming increasingly cut off from the rest of the world. In addition to the bridges that are washed out (including the one to Vallarta), Highway 200, the main N/S highway along the Pacific Coast, is now closed due to massive slides. We are hunkering down. I'm making black bean soup and I have some dough chilling for cheddar-apple turnovers.

Thanks, Vera - matches our rainy day perfectly. First batch of turnovers is done, second batch in the oven. Think I might as well make some corn bread while the oven is heated.

Sounds great! I'd love for you to post it.

Food sounds YUMMY!! Washed out bridges and slides doesn't sound to good. Are you safe?

Sounds great! I'd love for you to post it.
I did GG, scroll up for the link.

We had BBQ (no pics I have a migraine going on 3 days now) - burgers hot dogs, ribs (prepackaged kind ACK!! Hub bought them), burger and dog fixin's, mashed taters (because my tummy is being affected by this dang migraine!!) and green salad. I prepped and Hub did most of the cooking (the sun was not my friend  I could only manage 10 minutes outside). I managed some burger and mashed the rest of my food is going to the cats.

TBone on the grill, beer soaked corn on the cob, port sauteed mushrooms and tortellini salad

We had a rummage sale Saturday, and today, we cleaned out the basement. It is about 1/2 finished, and with no garage, it had collected a bit of junk! We recycled a mountain of cardboard boxes and magazines, have a load ready to take to the landfill, and my car is full of clothes, books, vases, blankets. I'll drive around tomorrow looking for a charity to drop it all off at... Salvation Army doesn't take clothes.
sooooo.... easy supper, chili dogs. Used the beef Oscar Mayer ones, no nitrates/nitrites whatever, hormel chili with beans, smooth white "wheat" buns, onion, jalapeno, and some shredded cheddar/jack cheese.
now, to go pick up some apples from a friend... will make up some apple butter (use a crock pot overnight)

late nite snack of polish sausage w melted dubliner cheese and BBQ sauce on toasted hoagie rolls... fusion? desperation? I really don't care I am hungry and its good. Spent the afternoon at a bar on the river drinking G&Ts and eating shrimp and mussels that was lovely... but oh hell work tomorrow is gonna suck

Ahh Vera, that's a beautiful plate of food :-)

I ate some of what I took along to work, and picked around the carry in table in the conference room.
Had some lovely genoa salami, with a garlic spread and cheese.
In fact, I kept going back and taking a piece of salami, adding a slice of cheese and the spread, then putting a celery stick in the center, then rolling up and eating.
There were a ton of dessert type dishes, and the usual fare, deviled eggs and such.
The shredded/creamed chicken sandwiches were good too.

I grilled some skirt steak on the Weber and baked some focaccia (thanks Karen!) in the wfo. Yes, I know, strange combination of food....but with plenty of beer and wine going around, it didn't matter...lol...

I'm so impressed by everyone's pics - beautiful plate, Vera. I really like the look of that tortellini salad and will try it soon. George, your focaccia looks perfect, so evenly cooked. Peeps - I'm so sorry you could not enjoy the day, and hope your migraine is on its way out. My daughter has chronic migraines caused by a neck injury, and I understand how they just take you out.

We are perfectly safe, just a little inconvenienced. Wish I could say the same for others - apparently, there were at least three cars on the PV bridge when it went down last week. A taxi driver and one of his passengers were able to save themselves, while occupants of a pickup and a volkswagon have not been found. And in San Pancho, a town slightly north of us, the only access into the town was a bridge that has completely washed away. Really bad, because the regional IMSS hospital (Mexican government health care) is there. It is still overcast today and quite cool, but no more rain - yet. We normally get about 150" in the four months of rainy season, but we have been getting 6-8 inches a day for the past week.

We lost power about 6 pm, and it finally came back about 1 this morning. Our soup continued to cook on the gas range, but when I went to dish up dinner around 8, it was pretty dark. I did make some cornbread - no electrical "tools" required to make it. This is really good cornbread, and it calls for a cup of sour cream. I was out, so subbed some cottage cheese. Best cornbread I ever made - Jerry ate half a pan, with honey butter. And the apple turnovers were yummy - if you look carefully, you'll see that there is grated cheddar in the pastry. Very nice combo of flavors. If anyone is interested, I'll post the recipes for the cornbread and turnovers.

So sorry for those of you that had to return to work today. I remember what that was like - but look at it this way: just a 4-day work week!

Everyone's Labor Day weekend food rocked! Great displays of talent!
Good food, good company... Although I had to work all three days over the weekend, all three evenings were filled with fun.
