~so, whom has oh-so-subltly chosen to change your given name?

lol, i am now aubrylee. i was once named another way cuter name.

i happily accepted when my very beloved Pap said 'isn't she the cutest 'lil 'chit there is?' then chuckled in his pap-pride.

& i luved when my ex called me his angel. other than that, though, people change my name sooooooo often. i don't get that. wtf, i thought my name was kinda pretty.

My little sister (Siobhan) who is no longer on this earth - chose to change my given name, because she couldn't pronounce it when she was little.
Loralei became Lollie, and it stuck.
Dad always called me Bug, or Suzie or Suziecreamcheese when I was being bad.
Imagine that? lol
 
"Siobhan" - such a beautiful name, and that of the daughter of close friends (Seattle and Durham, England combo) who I first met in St. Andrews. I'm sorry for your loss, Lollie.
 
My father's Aunt Alice had four children (Dad's first cousins): Lee, Ann, Robert and Douglas.

My brother and I got their names, because Dad and Mom liked all the names. I do, too!

I've wanted to change my last name back to what it was in-processed into the orphanage.

Great GrandPa and GrandMa ostensibly got taken out in the Johnstown flood.

The worker at the orphanage couldn't understand GrandPa and his brother when they were spelling their name so the worker spelled the name with a more difficult name to spell.

That same thing happened to a lot of people coming over from Europe through Ellis Island.
 
Some people hate their given names. I always loved mine. I was named after two people. My Mom was a big fan of Jackie Kennedy, and most importantly I was named after my Dad. His name was John, but everyone called him Jack. So my name is Jacqueline (the ONLY correct spelling lol), Jackie or Jack. It's funny though because the only ones that called me Jacqueline were the nuns in school. :D

Yes, it did. And I believe many intentionally changed their names.

Somehow my sister has Grandpas birth certificate, had to have it translated from German/ Austrian. The Ostensibly is my earlier post is because I wonder how the certificate survived but my great grandparents didnt ....

like, wtf? for real..... she just changed my name, it's like she silently says to me, 'kay, your 30 (actually i was like mid-20's then), & now you're gonna take on this new self-title'. lol. i'm calling her to gripe @ her for that. it's somehow endearing, though.
 
DW will do that with people she really likes. It's kind of a bond thing, something special just between those two. She thinks it makes the person feel special. I have to wonder if some of them are annoyed she changed it or gave them a special nickname instead of simply using their given name? I had not considered that before. :confused:

Hopefully your friend is doing it for the same reasons my wife does it.
 
My name is pronounced Lay-nee and is the German nickname for Helena. My younger sister couldn't say it so I'm also Nee-Nee. I've always liked my name and very, very rarely have run into anyone with the same name although spelled differently.
 
Luvs, you would not believe the various ways my name has been pronounced and spelled. That's the down side of having an unusal name and one that is not spelled the way it is pronounced.

Names and their meanings are fun. Do you know the meaning of your name? I do.
 
my name Kim. I have often thought about changing my name. There have been times that I've been told that my name could not be Kim actually from the state of California that I live in. The DMV and at least two credit card companies I have had trouble with. When I called about I purchase they want to verify who you are, and I was told I could not possibly be Kim and handed me over to security. I promptly close those accounts (but it took months to do because I was handed over to security and they had locked my account.) Just because I'm a male and my name is Kim I have had numerous problems throughout my life. My sister gave me this name and is a good reason for you not to let your five-year-old name your little brother... Most men who are named Kim were born around 1950 or the Korean War. I have been told that Kim and Korean means eldest son. I don't know this to be a fact, but it sounds good to me and sticking to that story.

BTW , I am English, Irish, German, and have no Korean ancestors.
