FireCapt mentioning applesauce cake with walnuts got me to thinking.

What do you like best?

For me, it's a traditional white wedding cake recipe (you know, the one with almond extract and egg whites?) and a basic buttercream frosting.

I also like a good spicy apple cake with nuts and a rich butter based frosting-especially at this time of year as we head into autumn.

My favorite is chocolate cake with chocolate frosting but I only have that once a year on my birthday. lol
I don't eat many sweets...........except for JoeV's cinnamon rolls. haha
I do like an apple cake my mom used to make.

I don't like a lot of sweets either Barb, but when I want cake, man do I want a good slice of cake! :-)

My Grams used to make a fabulous apple cake with a burnt sugar icing (or something like that)
It was the best, wish I had the recipe <sigh>

Actually my favorite cake is the typical birthday, anniversary or wedding cake with the flowers that are so sweet they hurt when eating them. You have all had them I'm sure. Now I don't eat many sweets but have a real weakness for donuts but again my wife doesn't buy them for me often.

I had a tres leches cake for the first time at my sister's in May - addictive! I also like lemon-poppy seed Bundt cake with chocolate frosting and spice cake with buttercream frosting.

Oooooh, cake! One of my favorite things! I have a huge sweet tooth. (But I don't care for salty stuff. I wonder, do the people here that don't like sweets crave salty things?) Anyway, I don't like icing much except for the marshmallow based ones or the thin glazes. I would have to say I love pound cake or angel food cake best of all - usually topped with some sort of fruit or fruit puree. Jeez - now I'm craving cake!

Haha Terry!
As a matter of fact I do crave the salty stuff. I munch on pretzels, pork rinds, nuts, potato sticks, etc all day long!

That makes sense, doesn't it? Maybe it's the way our tongues are mapped out - which taste buds are more plentiful.

I prefer salty, fried and bready things to things like cakes, cookies and candy.
Don't know why.
Years ago I could clean a plate of brownies or eat 2 candy bars in a row.
Peach pie? forget it, I'd eat the whole damn thing, not to mention donuts.
One? NO, I'd want 3 or none at all LOL

Put a plate of Lay's potato chips in front of me vs a slice of cake-- I'll choose the chips now.

Brownies? Candy? Donuts??? Now I'm salivating! Chips I can take or leave. You know, this is probably nature's way of making sure we don't run out of cake or pretzels!

BUT, if it's white cake or a spice cake vs my beloved Doritos with coleslaw, then .. and only then, I'd be torn

Oh wait. I just remembered that you and I share a love for Boston Baked Beans and Ruffles potato chips, Sass! Is the Doritos and coleslaw just as good?

Well thankfully, variety is the spice of life!

(Doritos and coleslaw???)

Why yes!
KFC coleslaw and Ranch Doritos, or Fritos and baked beans (hot or cold):yum:
Chips dipped in anything is my preference unless of course, I have a slice of "the two" cakes.. lol

Oh yes, I love the Dorito scoops - they hold just the right amount of salsa!

I like them too, but I was talking about the thick, fatty Frito Corn Chip scoops.

Oh yes - I forgot about them. They are probably the strongest scoops, huh. (That's the only problem with the Dorito scoops - they break too easily!)

I know, nothing worse than digging around for lost pieces with your fingers in a dip or sauce when it comes to wimpy scoops :-)

Hey, do you suppose there is a recipe for a cake made of baked beans, coleslaw, Ruffles and corn chips?

Google would know...
brb...:shifty::tongue:

My favorite cake.

1st tier: Walnut cake - chocolate rum ganache - maple buttercream

2nd tier: walnut cake - chocolate rum ganache - maple buttercream

3rd tier: walnut cake - lots of chocolate ganache

Outside: chopped walnuts

That is just beautiful, SilverSage! I like a ganache or a glaze rather than a thick icing on top, but my ganaches never look that glossy. Do you have a secret for that?

BTW, you are a great food photographer!

My Grandma, God rest her soul, made the best Angel Food cake I've ever eaten. I guess I haven't picked a current favorite since she's been gone...

I've never met a well-made cake I didn't like, but I do like some more than others. I tend to get tired of heavy, super-sweet frosting and icing rather quickly, and I usually prefer cake with some texture (i.e., not super soft) and a lot of flavor. More often than not, that means something like this, which I've made a couple of times recently:

Buttermilk Lemon Pound Cake

:agree:
Dark frosting, too. Not that Nestle's Quik colored frosting. Made in layers so you can get that vein of frosting in the middle, too.... oh yeah babe :applause:

My all time favorite cake usually has a bathing suit wearing women that pops out of it and does a dance.
