Wow! That virus was a tough one. It got by my McAfee AV saturday. I tried running virus scans and deleting infected files and then got rid of McAfee and downloaded Avast...that got rid of some more infected files and I thought I had gotten rid of most of it but it got worse...it started messing with my search engine results and redirecting me. I ended up taking my PC into the Geek Squad at Best Buy on Saturday and just now got it back...$200 later......but, it's all better now. They said they have gotten a lot of computers in with that virus. You get pop-ups saying your computer is infected and you need to buy "Internet 2010 Security Suite" for $49.95 to get rid of it. The guy at Geek Squad told me that they are trying to get your credit card information and then they are sending it to Malaysia. They had several people come in who actually bought the bogus software that they were peddling and they told him that it didn't get rid of it. He had to break the news to them that their credit card information was stolen when they bought the bogus software. At least I didn't have to go through that crap too. Oh well, at least I'm back online....sure have missed you guys!

Now I've got a lot of catching up to do!

Sorry Mama. You should have emailed me a bit more. I could have told you how to hack your registry to do this. There are only 3 entries that need to be deleted, but it's tricky. I could have talked you through it over the phone. I hate you spent that kind of money for 3 lines of editing.

Example: Wk+R (that's the Windows Key Plus R) - type "regedit". This is an example only......if you try this and see that window, CLOSE it. You need intricate understanding or guidance to hack your registry.

BUT, the point is, it is possible, and not worth 200 bucks. I'm amazed at what they get for this.

That's alright Keltin...you tried...I'm just not very computer literate and just the thought of messing with the registry scares me. I ended up buying Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2010 from Best Buy and had them install it while it was there. They said they hadn't gotten any computers in with viruses (yet) that had this AV installed so hopefully this will be better than McAfee. I really can't complain...this is the first time (knock on wood) that I've had a virus that I could get rid of with Anti-Virus software.

Well, they are right about one thing, Kaspersky IS better than McAfee!!!

Oh Mama, I got that same virus just last week. Fortunately DH was able to get rid of it, it took him awhile though. lol Right before that my son's computer got it.

Ouch, that stinks Mama.

I think that's the same one I had to help my sister in law with over the holiday break. Took a couple hours of phone calls to get it up and running again.

I got hit with something similar at work right after logging in one day. First thing that struck me was how happy the IS staff was that I hadn't touched the computer once it popped up, so it hadn't really gotten a foothold. The second, more disturbing comment was "Yeah, we know it's on the network. You're about the 4th person this week to get hit".

And they wondered why their contract wasn't renewed at the end of 2009...

That's a popular rogue/fake/scareware alert this month.

For all home users, I highly recommend using Microsofts recently released "Security Essentials"...
it's FREE,
it doesn't nag you to upgrade/purchase,
it's relatively low system impact on your PC,
it has a simple user interface,
and it's VERY...VERY good as far as detection rates and cleaning. Microsoft released it October of last year.

The only other free AV product that is as good, IMO and in my experience, as well as shown by the only antivirus comparison site that I trust....av-comparatives.org....is AntiVir/Avira. But that product comes with nags to upgrade to their paid product. Yes there are tricks you can do to disable that nag, but the next program version upgrade puts it back.
Avast is "OK"....and AVG is not very good.

MSE is quite agressive at these rogues/fake alerts.

As to an additional malware removal program, MalwareBytes is pretty much the best, it's free. I'd run a few scans with that over the following week, before each scan make sure you do an update, they often have at least one definition update per day.

MSE...highly recommended to uninstall your current AV product and use this, even if you're using a paid product...MSE is probably better than it.
