What kitchen tool can you NOT live without?

For me, it's my flat whisk. I use that thing constantly! It's so good at getting into the corners of the pan that a balloon whisk can't. It's my most helpful tool I have :chef:

My trusty set of Henkels. They are not so grand as some of the Japanese cutlery that a few here have, but they have doen yeoman's duty for an awful lot of years now. I only cook for one or sometimes two and it is much easire to cut up and clean the knife than use the food processor.

I would have to say a good sharp, around 5" long, knife. All other tools can be substituted with other things.
A fork works as a whisk fairly well.
A large serving spoon works as a wooden mixing spoon.
Etc., etc., etc...
It would have to be a sharp knife. A butter knife just won't cut it... :-)

My cast iron and my fathers Hinkel knives.

Dad is the one who taught me to love cast iron. When we hiked into the High Sierras he alway carried a 16" cast iron skillet in his back pack. Along with that he packed fresh eggs in his clean underwear. Never broke one. That and the bacon was always put into the ice cold stream next to our camp site in a net along with other things that the Bar's would want. That way the bears did not smell it and come to our camp site.

He declared that nothing cooked like cast iron and he's right. Nothing browns like that. We always cooked the trout in it with plenty of butter. He was a great fisherman and we usually caught our limit within a few hours. I really miss those days. Mom told me that I was the son he never had. Moms are always right.

My classic 1957 Case XX chef knife, my cast iron skillet
and my wok.

My Chinese cleaver.

I use it more than my chefs' knife, especially for chopping, slicing and dicing!!

My KA Stand Mixers and my KA food processor are another.

They are the most versatile and the most powerful food preparation appliances that I've ever owned!!

Who'd want to beat up cake batter for a pound cake or knead heavy yeast dough for bread by hand, or even chop raw meat for burgers by hand!

I wouldn't be able to do it!! I rely on these most useful appliances to do it for me!

I love my 9" Japanese knife. It is so sharp, makes it easy to rock to make fine cuts. I didn't know what I was missing until getting those types of knives. Otherwise I'd say I'd be lost without my wife in the kitchen who is the primary cook ...but she is not a 'tool'. :yum:

I've been thinking on this for a while now and I think if I had to narrow it down to one, it would have to be my Wustoff Chef's knife. I used to have just cheap knives and never knew just how valuable a good knife was until I had one.

mama, a wusthof santoku was 1 of my most wise kitchen items to buy. luv that knife.

I have one of those too luvs. A few years ago, DH bought me a Wusthof knife block set with 8 steak knives, 9 knives of various sizes, a meat cleaver, a carving set with a carving knife and fork, a pair of kitchen shears and a honer, all Wusthof, as a Christmas gift. I am truly Blessed to have such a wonderful husband :in_love: ....I know he must have spent a small fortune on that set.

This one is easy a knife as I can do almost any chore with one if need be.

As long as you have a sharp knife you can do so many things but if we're talking something more advanced I do love my kitchen aid mixer.

Some people would list a can opener as the tool that they could not do without since everything that they eat comes out of a can........:) Don't think any of those people are on NCT, but you never know......

I'd struggle if all I had a was a can opener because I hardly ever eat anything from cans.

Was just about to reply with answer, I figured everyone knew what an All American canner was.

I use it for both canning and cooking, did two 3 gallon batches of brunswick stew over the weekend in it along with 2 racks of baby back ribs, chicken wings and a pork butt. All precooked on Weber charcoal grill and finished in cooker.

She's not a tool, but as far as kitchens go, I'd die without my wife. She does the indoor cooking.
Everything outdoors is mine.
