Richard Sear was the manager of a railroad office in Minnesota. In 1886, he had an offer to purchase a shipment of gold watches that had gone unclaimed. After he sold them easily, he ordered more. After selling those as well, he used his $5,000 in profits to relocate to Chicago and place an ad for a watchmaker. Alva Curtis Roebuck answered that ad and in two years they were selling products by way of their soon-to-be-famous mail-order catalog.
