Singapore chose Malay as its national language in order to reassure the
Malay community that Malays continue to hold a special position even after
independence. Although all Singaporeans should be able to sing the national
anthem, which is in the Malay language, very few non-Malay Singaporeans can
speak the national language as it is not compulsory to study Malay if it is
not one's mother tongue.
