Take out....Fried Chicken!

We all do take out, some way more than others, and some more than they'd care to admit. Personally, I really love some take out, but could drive by others for the rest of my life.

So, tonight...it's take out Fried Chicken. We're sampling a new restaurant, to Lou and I, that is...Church's Fried Chicken. People down here swear by it, and the war/battle seems to be from two camps - Popeyes (which is from Louisiana, by the way) and Churchs.

So, what's your favourite fried chicken place, and why??

(and if this is fun, we could pick a different take out place/cuisine for the next few weeks....)

By the way, we got chicken, corn on the cob, honey buttermilk biscuits and mashed potatoes with gravy.

Would you believe it? We DO have a Church's Fried Chicken in Puerto Vallarta, just about 10 miles from us. When we have business in Vallarta, we sometimes stop and get some. DD loves it; DH is not a fan of ANY "fast food", so doesn't care for it. I like the spicy version, but I do prefer Popeye's, mainly because I like the sides so much (the last time I had Popeye's Chicken was in the Hong Kong airport a few years ago). We have KFC also, but have never sampled it...we also have a Carl's Jr and a Burger King - haven't tried these. We did make a stop at one of many McDonalds a year or so ago...we felt yucky for a few days, because we're just not used to eating much fried food. Seems to me that the coleslaw was quite good at Church's and also the biscuits. Enjoy!!!

We have driven from Maine to Florida and diagonally to Arizona. We have had Popeye's, KFC, Carl Jr and Church's chicken along the way. We have Popeyes and KFC close to us at home. I love KFC mashed and gravy and the biscuits, Popeyes red beans and rice. Last vaction we stopped at Carl and Churh. We really didn't care for Carl, we didn't hate it but it was unremarkable as a matter of fact I can't remember what we actually had. We stopped at Church's and we liked the jalpeno poppers, chicken and taters.

Lee's Famous Recipe.
Not only is their chicken out of this world, they have fabulous deep fried gizzards, GREAT potato salad, bbq baked beans, corn on the cob, red beans and rice.. and awesome iced tea.

Closest ones are in Ohio 400 miles away or Virginia! Maybe we can hit the richmond, va 291 miles away next vaction to florida.

I don't like any of them - not really a fan of fried chicken.

But FWIW, SousChef loves Popeye's and hates Church's.

I am not sure if it is strictly a souther place, but Bojangles is my fave fried chicken(American Style). The chicken is always great, not too heavy on the breading, GREAT spice, juicy juicy juicy, and what makes it for me, the damned dirty rice, GOD it is good!

Okay...results are in! The chicken and biscuits were magnificent. The biscuits were glazed with a honey coating and simply the best fast food biscuits I've ever had. The chicken was superiour to KFC if for no other reason than it was significantly less greasy. I'd like to have Popeyes (which has been my favourite up till now) and Church's at the same time to do a comparison. We did not have the spicy, which is what I would have preferred..but Lou doesn't like spicy so...we got the regular.
The corn was a bit bland and mushy. I know it's not corn season, but this was a frozen product, anyway.
The mashed potatoes and gravy were fine, but that's it...just fine. They did have nice texture which is more than I can say about KFC.

imo, kfc sucks, hands down. even mickey d's has better fried tenderloins.

popeye's can be really good but you have to get it within a half hour of major serving times (11:30am, 4:30pm). otherwise, it's average to sucky at best.

i had church's a long time ago and vaguely remember it being very good. i'll have to be on the lookout to try it again.

The KFC here in town closed down.
No great loss.
Years ago, I used to think the extra crispy was the most fabulous chicken ever. Then decided it was too fatty and wet under that crispy coating and would only get the original.
They used to sell a bbq chicken too.
I had one of those bowls with the chicken, mash and corn when it first came out.
OMG...:puke1:felt like I swallowed a brick.

Glad you and Lou enjoyed your foray into Church's chickiedom!

Honestly, never been a fan of fried chicken. Don't like the skin or I wind up peeling it off. I'll do take out rotisserie, or chicken breasts from the deli section of the market. Sometimes they offer chicken breasts w/ pineapple & green peppers. Not too shabby. Would like to find a Broasted chicken place.

I seem to be in the minority, but I LOVE KFC! I worked there as a teenager and usually go once or twice a month for lunch. I get the extra crispy, mashed potatoes and gravy, and baked beans. In fact, when I'm not feeling well or have just had a medical procedure, it's my comfort food.

As an aside, I worked at Burger King in high school, too. They don't fry their burgers - they're broiled. When I go there, I get two burgers (I have a medical need for extra protein) with mustard, ketchup and pickles only, and a chocolate milk. Fast food doesn't HAVE to be fatty or unhealthy.

Bojangles is my fave too. Love the dirty rice and they make a really good sweet tea!

We don't have any of the places you folks above mentioned, except KFC. And the one in my town closed down.

I LOVED it, but only had it maybe twice in 10 years.

Don't like KFC or Mrs. Winner's. Bojangles is my favorite followed by Popeye's and then Church's. When it comes to a chicken sandwich, it's Chick-fil-a hands down!

The Churches here tends to be greasy. I really like Popeyes. KFC is good here and I like their biscuits.

It's got slightly sweet coating. It's served on a buttered bun with 2 pickles

I found a 'mall' about a month or so after we moved here. Lou hates being in a mall more than I do, so he bugged out and went to a book store down the road. I had to be there, so I was stuck. After I made my purchases I noticed a chic-fil-a in the small food court. When I got into the car I opened the bag..and the aroma filled the car immediately. Lou got in a couple of minutes later. We ate them right there, driving along Causeway Blvd in New Orleans! Heaven!

I have to agree with chic-fil-a. They are sooo good, and they do have exactly two pickles, usually one slapped right on top of the other. I always have to rearrange those darn pickles.

i haven't had chick fil a in years. it's supposed to be the healthiest fried chicken of all fast food joints.

i just remembered that the best puerto rican style fried chicken is from a place on 155th street and broadway called new caporral. it's in a really bad neighborhood so you have to pay through a bank teller's drawer thing through a wall of bullet proof glass, but it's oh so good. and you get 3 big pieces and a huge amount of fries for only $5.
