Sunday dinner - 26 September

VeraBlue

Head Mistress
It's still low 90s around here, but as far as I'm concerned, it's autumn. We are supposed to get some rain this afternoon, so that's being looked forward to.

We just got back from the restaurant - working on the ceiling in the balcony today.

I'm making chicken stock right now. Later, I'll make a pot of chicken soup with ancini di pepe. Lou brought a huge italian hero back from philly, so we'll share that, along with the soup.

Dessert is going to be a taste challenge. We've got a Hubig's lemon pie and Lou brought back a Tastykake lemon pie. So....it's the battle of the pies tonight.

What are you making?

Re: dinner this sunday, 9/26

I have no solid clue whats for dinner yet. But I am thinking I will fry up the cubanelles and habs, add some of the hot pepper paste, dried chilis, chopped tomato, onions and some garilc in grapseed oil or flaxseed oil or EVOO or maybe a blend of a little of each. Not sure how I will serve it (by itself as a side or over pasta). I will probably be eating it alone!! LOL I feel like eating something hot for some reason.

Friends are coming for dinner, and I'm making some chile-rubbed pork tenderloins, sweet potatoes, stuffed tomatoes, salad...I was going to make a key lime pie, but burned the crust I made this morning. Then I dropped a whole BAG of sesame seeds on the kitchen counter, followed by breaking a bottle of balsamic vinegar on top of that - all over the counter, the floor, yikes. Still in the cleanup stage...then I'll think about dessert.

Making soup at church... will post a pic later. I have the kielbasa sliced, browned, ready to throw in the pot. The kale is washed and cut up, ready to throw in the pot. Will add the cannelini beans, chicken stock, seasonings. Will season it with rosemary, oregano, dried onion flakes, garlic, and a can of cream of celery soup.

Vera, you have a habit of making me google your ingredients  I'd never heard of acini di pepe before. I hope to find it and try it one day.

I'm making the German potato and sausage soup I mentioned yesterday. I need something green - maybe I'll thaw and saute some green beans from the spring garden. Some of those red Anaheim peppers and garlic might be good with that.

All I ever use ancini di pepe for is to make an Easter Sweet Pie. I will have to by some and put it in broth (I usually put pastina in broth).

Well dinner is going to be Kraft homestyle (the new one in the bag) with tuna.

I bought some Hot Sopressata (dry Italian sausage) and Herr's cracked pepper and sea salt kettle chips (I never had them before, these chips are pretty good) from the farm, which I had as a snack about 2 hours ago.

Chicken and dumplins over mash- biggie carrot, steamed and buttered.

I use ancini di pepe #28 in my Italian wedding soup, and sometimes in my Pasta E Fajioli if I'm out of ditailini or just for a change of pace.

Tonight I made pan fried center cut boneless pork chops breaded with seasoned Panko crumbs. I also made redskins, boiled, then fried in butter, olive oil, fresh diced onion, mixed Italian seasonings and seasoned Panko crumbs. Steamed green beans from the garden with butter and fresh grated Parmesan cheese. DW made the salad that is really a meal all by itself. I have no idea what all goes into it, but I know there are craisins, sunflower seeds, slivered almonds, Chinese noodles, etc., etc.

That looks fantastic Joe!!

Here's the soup... can't really see the white beans. Everyone loved it. Most had never had kale before! Topped it with shaved parmesan.

We have been having alot of dinners out recently (fast food, frozen pizza's etc.) but tonight I finally had time to cook a real meal and grab some pics.

We had roasted chicken thighs, green beans and fettucini with a sage cream sauce and a garden salad.

Today we went to a "Meet Up" group luncheon.. 12 people, each to bring an Asian dish. This was our first foray into something like that, didn't know a soul...
Brought beef Bulgogi, was well received! There was a chicken curry, Udon noodles with asst toppings, a ground lamb "meatball" dish, Asian short ribs, a spicy slaw salad, a shrimp noodle dish, some way overcooked but still decent lumpia? rolls, something else...
Overall, food was good but not exceptional. Company was very friendly, felt right at home but slightly ignored, since we were the only newbies.
THat was pretty much dinner too, just snacked a bit this evening.

Golly, there are so many beautiful dinners on display tonight. Sass, I'm proud of you for making those chicken and dumplings - they look very tasty (and the mashed potatoes!) Oh my. JoeV, you and your DW made a picture-perfect dinner. Nice taters. Phiddle, I can see why everyone liked the soup Nice stuff! And mhend - your dinner is gorgeous. Sage cream sauce? Be still, my heart. My hubby just does not care for cream sauces, so I don't make them often, but I LOVE them. It is nice to see you back, with your beautiful meals and great photography.

Our dinner didn't photograph really well, but it tasted good, especially those stuffed tomatoes...stuffed with spinach, bacon, diced onions, sour cream w/ a little hot sauce added, and of course, cheese. Mashed baked sweet potatoes with butter, chile-rubbed roasted pork tenderloin, steamed mixed vegetables. Corn bread with whipped honey butter (forgot to put sugar in the corn bread, so sprinkled a little on top.) Apple cake with whipped cream for dessert - forgot to take a picture.

Nice work everyone, and thanks for sharing your pictures with the rest of us!
