Went for a 5 mile walk in Audobon Park today...and every muscle hurts. Hard to understand, considering we do a 15-20 mile bike ride almost daily... but I need comfort!
So, I'm making Ya-Ka-Mein, which means Old Sober here in New Orleans. It's traditionally served out of grocerys and corner shops, at second lines, and during Carnival. It's a soup with hard to trace origins, but the Koreans, the Blacks, and just about everyone else feel they invented it.
You start with a slow simmered roast, adding seasonings to the water. Once the meat is fork tender, remove it and shred or chop it. You serve the soup traditionally in styrofoam cups, but I'll use a bowl. Cooked spaghetti goes into the bowl, topped with the meat and half a hard cooked egg. Then generously sprinkle chopped green onions, ladle the broth, add an ample amount of soy sauce and hot sauce.
When it's done, and if the camera cooperates, I'll get you a picture.
I'm also going to grill some chicken breasts to serve with salad and garlic bread.
Ya Ka Mein, baby!
What about you?
