Like other battles (Pizza, Sandwich, Hot Dogs, etc), Gumbo is there to see everyone’s interpretation of Gumbo. There are many. Ranging from Seafood and Sausage, to Chicken, to Vegetarian. Not sure who suggested it, but there are many ways to make a Gumbo, and since someone threw it out there, and we’ve already done Pizza, Sandwich, etc, it stuck.

Works for me  I haven't had a lot of experience with gumbo, so I thought of it as a stew with specific ingredients, but if it can vary that much, should be interesting to see the results.

i haven't been able to get involved, and i haven't read through all of the pages of this thread, but has keeping the selected ingredient or technique in sync with the season been suggested?

i mean like a fruit/veggie or protein (think soft shell crabs, or spring lamb) in it's season, or warm weather stuff like salads or outdoor cooked meals in the summer. conversely, soups, stews, and roasts to the fall and winter.

of course, the wrench in the works is that seasons affect different zones, and heck, different hemispheres at different times.

well, it's just an idea.

peaches and plums are almost in season. wild blueberris should still be around too.

meatballs - we had this in ground meat
potted roast is a technique not an ingredient - beef, pork, lamb, turkey all can be roasted
sauces are sauces and if u r being specific about them being pasta sauce then they would probably go with the pasta category

edit:
u added stew..again to stew something is a technique and not really an ingredient.. you can stew fruits and make it a jelly, jam or compote

than gumbo is a .............? technique?

gumbo is a soup or stew...i never said anything about the gumbo category

if you want to get real technical about the word gumbo, its from Bantu(Angolan) word (ki)ngombo, meaning okra. The word came into Caribbean Spanish as guingambó or "qimbombó."

so technically, the meaning of gumbo is a vegetable

just trying to understand the rules and Standards

everybody is getting way to serious about this contest..lol

Keltin & i started this to have fun and compete with each other over Smoked Lasagna. We thought it would be a great idea to get everyone involved and share ideas plus get new recipes.

there are no real rules or standards is that the dish must feature the chose ingredient...that being said, i dont see a problem with adding dishes/casserole/stews the list..

we kept it simple with just ingredients when we started this just to see if the interest was there and if it would continue to stay

we were basing it on the real IC show which uses ingredients and not techniques
