I went to cook dinner and I suddenly had a fireworks show inside my oven....and then it caught on fire! :unsure:So I had to cut the breaker and now.......time for a new stove!

We aren't too upset about it since we planned to redo all our appliances soon in stainless steel.
Any advice on a good one to get? I'm also stumped on gas stove or the electric kind that are completely flat on the range.

What do you guys have and can you tell me some of your thoughts on pros and cons of different types??

TIA!!

Yikes! I'm glad no one was hurt.

I like gas stoves - I think I have more control over the heat level. I've never used a flat electric stove, so I can't comment on that. My oven has convection, a bread proofing feature, and a temperature probe - I can insert the probe into some meat and set the final temp I want it to cook to. I also have a warming drawer, although if I could do it over again, I'd get the double oven with one regular and one small oven - you can set them for different temperatures and for example, bake some cookies in one while you roast a chicken or bake bread at a high temp in the other. hth.

If I had a choice, I'd get dual-fuel - gas on top, and electric convection in the oven.

I have a smooth-top electric. In many parts of Florida, we can't get natural gas. The only way to get gas in some areas is to have liquid propane tanks in your yard. I've lived with electric for 20 years, and have gotten used to it, but given a chance, I'd go back to a gas stove top. But since I have to have electric, a smooth top is much easier to keep clean, (and it looks good, too).

That said, electric holds the temp better and heats more evenly in the oven box. That's why we're seeing so many dual-fuel ranges in the stores. It's the best of both worlds!

great tips you guys thank you! I never would have thought to look into a dual fuel...I like the sound of that!

I have a smooth top electric at the coast and a gas with convection here. If I could have my dream stove, it would be dual fuel with sealed gas burners and electric with convection oven.

I prefer gas. I bought a GE Profile SS with 5 sealed burners last year and have been very pleased with it. It has 5 burners, a gas lock-out that would be great to have with your little ones, a 5.0 cu.ft. main oven that has the convection feature, a second small oven that is wonderful around the holidays. The top is SS and is extremely easy to clean.

A lot of people really seem to like the induction stoves. I've never used one but that would be a really nice feature to have.

This is the stove that I have:

Thanks FM. I used to have a white Maytag gas stove with gray porcelain coated burners. That was the worst stove top in the world to clean. I love the black cast iron grates on this one and the SS top is so easy to clean. I just put the grates in the sink and spray them with greased lighting, let them sit a little while and then rinse them off and put them back on the stove. The stove top cleans up really well using hot soapy water and a little Bar Keepers Friend or Dawn Power Dissolve when necessary.

I have a similar stove Mama. Mine is black and only has 4 sealed burners.

Never again Black - Other than that - Love it.

We don't have gas, so I have an electric cooktop with the smooth glass top that I really like. If I could choose though, I would have a gas cooktop.

I guess I didn't say. I have gas, I like gas. I would buy gas again. Dual fuel is interesting. What does it use to broil?

If you don't end up getting gas...and you go electric....you can still get some electrics that perform very well. I've been without gas stoves for a while now..and the house we're about to close on has gas..so I'm psyched. But just because I was stuck with electric in my prior house...I still liked it.

As with many things in life..."Not all are created equal".

Some electric stove tops can take a 1/2 hour to boil a big pasta pot of water. Others can "get 'r done" in far less time. When I was shopping for my smooth top stove, I ended up finding out that electric stoves with the tops made in Germany performed the best. I wanted a smooth glass top one because of the ease of cleanup, and neat appearance. I ended up getting a Frigidaire Gallery series...for me it was a good combination of features and price. Worked very well for me.

Convection oven feature...I'm sure you know how much better they are.

Here is the 4 piece set I ended up getting! Its a Frigidaire Gallery I have a few things I need to get use to still but vast improvement from our last set!!
