[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]1/2 cup sweet butter[/FONT]
[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]1/2 cup brown sugar, firmly packed[/FONT]
[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]1 large egg, well beaten[/FONT]
[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]1/3 cup whole milk[/FONT]
[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]3-1/2 cup sifted all-purpose flour[/FONT]
[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]3 teaspoons baking powder[/FONT]
[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]1/2 teaspoon salt[/FONT]
[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]1 teaspoon vanilla extract[/FONT]

[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]2 cups chopped dates[/FONT]
[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]2/3 cup sugar[/FONT]
[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]2/3 cup water[/FONT]
[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]1 Tablespoon lemon juice[/FONT]
[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]1 Tablespoon sweet butter[/FONT]

[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]Directions:[/FONT]
[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]Cream the butter; add the sugar and mix. Add the egg and vanilla. Mix. Sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Alternate flour mixture with milk. Put in refrigerator to chill. Roll dough to 1/8-inch thickness. Cut out circles. Place a spoonful of filling in center and fold. Bake in a moderate oven, 350 degrees until done--do not burn.[/FONT]

This sounds pretty good. DW won't eat dates whole but will if they are chopped or pureed into something...

Note: As this is an old recipe, I bet the 3 teaspoons of baking powder was before double active baking powder was around. You might want to try half that amount or a little more than a teaspoon.
