Sad Day

We had to say good bye to Woody our Yellow Lab. For 12 years he was large (100#) and in charge of the household.

It is a sad day. I know how hard it is to say goodbye to our "children". We did it twice and they are always in our hearts.

Vaya con Dios, Woody.

I hate saying goodbye to our fuzzy four-leggers. You have my sympathies.

Nope. I didn't say enough.

Cherish each memory you have where Woody:

1. Pooped in the house;
2. Woke you up with a slimey lick on the face;
3. Barked incessantly at that annoying cat next door;
4. Tracked mud through the house after letting him out to pee late on a rainy night;
5. Shook himself dry in the house after you bathed him OUTSIDE;
6. Chewed up your favorite whatever;
7. Stole your much-anticipated snack while you answered the phone;
8. Greeted you when you came home with his tail wagging so hard you feared he might dislocate a hip;
9. Put his head on your lap during a difficult time for you (the kind of time where you just don't have the answer yet), and Woody's look just says, "Whatever it is, you'll figure it out. You're my hero." And then, you just figure it out. All because Woody had faith in you.

Blessings to you.

MGJ, you have my sympathy-I know all too well what your going through right now, and that there are really no words to take away the pain. The following was passed on to me in this forum (via Jim Slagle) when I was mourning the loss of my little JRT, Bailey. I hope it helps, and don't hesitate to PM if you feel like talking-I understand.

LEND ME A PUP

I will lend to you for awhile,
a pup, God said,
For you to love him while he lives
and mourn him when he's dead.

Maybe twelve or fourteen years,
or maybe two or three.
But will you, 'till I call him back,
take care of him for me?

He'll bring his charms to gladden you
and (should his stay be brief)
you'll always have his memories
as solace for your grief.

I cannot promise he will stay,
since all from earth return
But there are lessons taught below
I want this pup to learn.

I've looked the whole world over
in search of teachers true,
And from the folk that crowd life's land
I have chosen you.

Now will you give him all your love
Nor think the labour vain,
Nor hate me when I come to take
my sweet Pup back again?

I fancied that I heard them say
"Dear Lord Thy Will be Done,"
For all the joys this Pup will bring,
the risk of grief we'll run.

We'll shelter him with tenderness,
we'll love him while we may,
And for the happiness we've known
forever grateful stay

But should you call him back
much sooner than we've planned,
We'll brave the bitter grief that comes,
and try to understand.

If, by our love, we've managed,
your wishes to achieve
In memory of him we loved,
to help us while we grieve,

When our faithful bundle
departs this world of strife,
We'll have yet another Pup
and love him all his life.

My condolences MGJ. I've been there a few time with pets, and now we're just waiting out the final days of our current Lab/mix (Cancerous tumors). I feel your pain.

It happens to all livin things. This does not make it any easier. they become such a part of our life that they make a big hole when they are gone. Remember the good and the bad, for it is all good.

Sorry for your loss.

Sorry for your loss Mr. Green Jeans.
SK beat me to posting "Lend me a pup" ...good job SK. That helped me in a time of need a few years ago, I hope it helped you too MGJ.
It is so devastating to loose our best buddies. Hang in there man.

Thanks all. I believe there was a line in "Life's Little Instruction Book" that said "Own a great dog." I have had several.

Once we get moved, our next will be a rescue.

Glad you liked it. As a stand alone dish I would of added meat of some kind perhaps lamb would be good with it.

I am so sorry about your good boy, Mr. Green Jeans. It hurt to read your post and to look at his picture. This stuff always kills me.

And forget reading SK's poem (sorry, SK, I'm at work on lunchbreak and weeping loudly is frowned upon). I'm sure it's beautiful.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss.

The poem SK posted is one of our favorites. I've forwarded it to several friends over the years. I added a section for "Saying Goodbye" to our clubs website several years ago.

Here's another;

I Stood by Your Bed Last Night
1x1.gif

I stood by your bed last night, I came to have a peep.
I could see that you were crying, You found it hard to sleep.
I whined this to you softly as you brushed away a tear,
"It's me, I haven't left you, I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here."

I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea,
You were thinking of the many times,
your hands reached down to me.
I was with you at the shops today,
Your arms were getting sore.
I longed to take your parcels, I wish I could do more.

I was with you at my grave today,
You tend it with such care.
I want to reassure you, that I am not lying there.
I walked with you towards the house,
as you fumbled for your key.
I gently put my paw on you, I smiled and said "it's me."

You looked so very tired, and sank into a chair.
I tried so hard to let you know, that I was standing there.
It's possible for me to be so near you everyday.
To say to you with certainty, "I never went away."

You sat there very quietly, then smiled, I think you knew.
That in the stillness of that evening, I was very close to you.
The day is over... I smile and watch
you yawning and say "goodnight,
God bless, I'll see you in the morning."

And when the time is right for you to cross the brief divide,
I'll rush across to greet you and we'll stand, side by side.
I have so many things to show you, there is so much for you to see.
Be patient, live your journey out ... then come home to be with me.
