Pizza stone cleaning question

NOOOOO!!! Leave it alone. After you use it you can scrape off the crumbs and let the oven burn it off and clean it. It will develop what you call a stain--it is suppose to.

one needs to exercise some care on the washing bit - most absorb water readily and heating up a damp one can result in an energetic dis-assembly of same . . .

I kinda' don't think too many nasty bugs survive a 500'F preheat, so I've never washed mine - scrape off any baked on goop and keep on pizzaing.

Water and soap can absorb into the stone and make your bread taste bad, too. If attempted when the stone is hot, it can break it.

Thanks guys good to know, as I didn't want to touch it until I knew for sure. I have simply been scarping it off while still hot then leaving it in the oven till it cools. I then store it wiping it with a paper towel. It isn't anywhere near as stained/dark as CM is yet but on the way but I haven't used it much since I got it. Maybe only a few pizza's made using it.

Technically, there is no way that a pizza stone can be cleaned.

I tried everything that I could think of to try to get it cleaned, and nothing worked! Once it becomes stained, it is permanent. You'll just have to live with it.

Unless you want to go out and buy a new one, which I'm not about to do!

If or when it bothers me that the thing is dirty, I just put a piece of foil on it before putting the pizza on it.

Joe, if it really bothers you, you can put it through a clean cycle of your self cleaning oven. That will usually cook off many of the stains. Like everyone else said, no soap and avoid soaking water.

it can handle heat has high as self clean without cracking?

I had thought about using the oven cleaning mode before but haven't tried it. I've just made up my mind to live with it and keep it out of site when not in use.

If you rotate the picture of ChowderMan's stone, you will see a womans face!

Kind of like a zippo lighter I bought at a place in Hong Kong called the Sh*t Kicker's Bar. It had a unique version of the 23 Psalms on one side an what looked like a swan on the other until you opened it and turned it upside down. It was really obscene but a real conversation starter.

But wouldn't putting foil on the stone defeat one of the reasons of using the stone in the first place, like absorbing moisture from the crust?

the stuff is kiln fired at 2500'F or so, it's safe [g]
avoid thermal shock tho - rapid changes in temp are not a good thing.

oh - I should add, save yo'self the trouble tho - that pictured round stone has been through self clean 2-3 times.

>>face on the stone
that'd be Our Lady of Pisa , , ,
