Onion storage

I'm not sure how much this is a "tool of the trade", but here it is anyway.
I picked it up at the grocery store last week. Currently if I have leftover onion, and I do a lot, I put it on a small plate with plastic wrap over it. It will easily last a week in the fridge, but sometimes I find myself needing to stretch a new sheet over it to keep getting a decent seal. I saw this thing and couldn't resist. I haven't given it a full week test yet. And it might not be as airtight as plastic wrap, but it takes up less room and protects the onion, plus the integrity of what seal there is. And most importantly, it looks cool  It was 3.49 and is dishwasher safe.

There's a sucker born every minute.........

:sorry:

:hide:

It is pretty cool looking. I just wrap mine in Press n Seal.

I use a Lock & Lock container for leftover onion, which keeps the odors from filling the fridge. We have approximately 11 million of the things in every size and shape, thanks to DW.

I put mine in a baggie and throw it in the crisper, but it tends to get lost among the other stuff in there. That little plastic onion would make finding it easier. I always have a red onion going too, so I'll take two, please .

Me too, but I put it at the front of the drawer where I can see it. Uncut onions just sit on an open grate shelf in the pantry. They seem to last forever as long as they can breathe. Of course, I use so many onions that they really don't last more than a week to 10 days.

Do you still store it in the fridge? I'm curious as to how this turns out....Thank you for sharing this :)

not really... i'll try to get a pic when i clean up dinner...... it only sucks when i have a stuffed fridge :)
Do they look like this Suzi?

I've seen others that hang from the shelf, but when you said Tupperware, I figured that was them.
I want some!

I was going to get one of these, but then I thought to myself; "Plastic zip top bags serve the perporse." :yum:

I just bought some zip-locs yesterday, two sizes. They will be replacing the ones I am almost out of and have had the boxes for probably eight years... I am too stingy with my zip-locs.

I've been using my little onion container for over a month now and here's my opinion.
For form, I give it ****
It's cool looking. It locks well and can take the abuse of being pushed around by other stuff in the fridge. It's dishwasher safe. I would have given it five stars except, if there is only half an onion in it and that onion isn't placed just so in the container, it tends to wobble like a weeble.
For function I give it *
It holds the onion, but that's where it's function stops. It does not keep the onion fresh at all. The tight feeling twist lock does nothing to keep air out and I found my cut onion starting to dry out and lose flavor after a couple days. I am going back to a plate and plastic wrap until I can find a perfect size tupperware type container.

The ruling: Gadget.

Thanks for the update. I just happened to see those in our GE the other day and wondered if you still liked yours. lol

I keep those plastic bags from the market produce section that you put veggies into and store cut veggies in them during the week.

I have a "garlic cellar" for my garlic, Sherm. I like it, but it only holds 2-3 bulbs.
I'll probably use this onion thing to hold garlic that I've started peeling cloves from and set it on the cellar. It will match the terra cotta cellar anyway, if not the while bulb of garlic (lol).

I buy my garlic cloves already peeled from one of the Spanish convenience stores in my neighborhood.
