Alan Shepard made the fitst sub orbital flight. John Glenn wa first to orbit the earth. Unless one of the X-15 or SR-71 pilots got there first. AH! Here it is.

The highest flight by an aircraft was the X-15, flown by Joe Walker on 22 August 1963. He flew 67.0 miles in altitude, and at a speed of 3794 mph.


100 km, or about 62 miles above sea level, is the commonly used altitude for the beginning of space. This is known as the Karman Line.
