Netflix

I'm pretty happy with the set up using component cables. Wireless is working fine now with the box.....no more stalls. :D

Thanks for all the helpful advice!

Honestly, there is not a whole lot of different between Component (RGB) and HDMI for regular SD streaming. I ran Component on Roku for a LONG time myself and had great picture. HDMI cables are expensive! That is, until I found out my computer guy is selling them for 15 bucks per 10 foot cable!!! I bought five!

About the only time you can tell a slight difference (HDMI being just a bit better) is when you play an HD movie. There aren't many HD movies on Roku right now, so you should be pleased with Component – and even when you switch to HDMI, the improvement is negligible and based on your TV.

Just make sure to set your Display Type in the Roku menus to HDTV. The options are 4:3, 16:9, and HDTV. Definitely select HDTV if your TV can do 720p.
Thanks for the follow up FooD!!! :thumb:

I'm still on the fence but leaning to getting a RUKU box. I could serve the same function with an old PC, but it does not have wireless. By the time I set it up with wireless, and the correct video outs I'd have over 50 bucks in an old PC. It would probably break down shortly afterwards ....so I'm leaning to RUKU.
Glad to hear RGB hookup works just about as well as HDMI. Lightning hit close to our house this past August while we were on vacation. It took out two garage door openers, our Direct TV box, the vonage device, our Router, one TV, the dishwasher and the HDMI on our main TV (a 57" Sony rear projection). It's been a pain getting stuff back working again, and with HDMI out it gives me a good excuse to upgrade our TV. We paid 2k for the Sony and it's only 8 years old. :pat: I hate to upgrade already but honestly I have a spot picked out in the basement for the Sony once I figure out what flat screen to upgrade to. But, that will be after the 1st of the year at the very soonest. So, knowing I can use the RUKU box on RGB makes it a very viable option for me.
Thanks Keltin.

My Roku box stopped working. It no longer picks up wi-fi signals, not even my neighbors'. I even tried a different router. I tried everything short of hard wiring it directly to the modem as I don't have a 40ft ethernet cable. I tried resetting the box countless times. Am I screwed?

Sounds like it. If your box has indeed failed I might be able to give you a good price on my Roku HD + remote. I can pick up Netflix through my PS3 but not sure if I can get Pandora (which has become important to me). I'll have to check this out - looks good on paper.

I would ditto what buzz said, but then I also moved off the box and am streaming over the Wii now. Kids are addicted to that and the Wii so now I barely ever get to see any TV or movies of my own!
I wish Netflix would allow each login ID the ability to stream instead of just the parent ID, then I could kick the kids off and let them watch their shows from their computers.

I just received the following email from Roku:

It’s way better than a tie.
You can still get Dad the best way to watch instant movies, TV shows, sports, and more. Purchase a Roku HD-XR Player and save $25. The offer ends June 20, 2010, but be sure to check the shipping deadlines to make sure your gift arrives in time. Order now — this offer is only available here.
"here" takes you to the Roku site.

Of course that is $25 off a price of $129.99 whereas a Roku HD is $99.99 to begin with.

Thanks Buzz, I got that same email from them this morning. I'm still deciding what to do with my Netflix account.

Did you try unplugging the power supply for 60 seconds and then try again?

If that doesn't do it, then try a Factory Default through the menus. You'll have to re-register your box if you do that, but it may fix the problem.

Also, check your wireless router and make sure it's set to transmit its SSID.

Thanks Keltin, I tried almost everything. Yes, my wireless router is fine as my laptop picks up its SSID. I even moved the box to hook up to a different tv in another room. No luck.
I can't even get to the menus on the box. I think I'm toasted on this unit...:D

Actually, after the home page is launched, I get the basic menu which asks me to choose between wired and wireless. And when I select wireless it tells me there's no signal. There's nothing I can do after that other than return and start over again.

Well, that blows.

Have you tried moving Roku so that you can test it in a wired configuration?

If that works, you can get 50' Ethernet cables for $4.57 and 75' for $6.98 at this site.

Also, you mentioned trying Roku on a different router. Does that mean you have 2 wireless routers? If so, you can set one up as a wireless bridge, place it next to Roku, and then wire Roku to that router with a 1-3 foot cord. The two routers will then communicate via Wi-Fi. The old router would effectively be taking the place of the faulty Wi-Fi hardware in the Roku (and you'd set the Roku for a Wired connection).

Here's how to do it with a Belkin Wireless G Router.

Thanks for that idea. Both my routers are 5 years old, a Lynksys and a D-Link which I am not using. I'll look into it and see if I can bridge them.

You'll probably need a firmware upgrade if they are that old. Check their websites for updates and instructions/support for wireless bridging.
