Kitchen Horror Stories

My mom made the best fried chicken when I was growing up. So when I met my hub to be one of the first meals I made him was fried chicken. Mom would cook the chicken in a deep dutch oven and at the very end after there was not much popping and sizzling coming from the pot she would turn the heat up, put a small amount of water in the cover and clap it on the pot and cook for 3 minutes covered then uncover till popping and sizzling stopped. WELL I did as mom did - same recipe of spices, cooking and at the end I did the water thing BUT I forgot that she would turn the heat OFF before the water was added and when the oil calmed down she would uncover the pot and finish the cooking. The water thing always gave the chicken a nice crisp crust. MAN BIG mistake!! I didn't turn the fire off and the cover came shooting off the pot and oil went everywhere!! We lived there for 3 years and I kept finding oil splatters in the oddest places!! lol Mom got a HUGE laugh out of my story!! It seems she was taught this recipe and method from a girlfriend who grew up down south and MOM ALSO made that mistake!! She said "I never had to learn that lesson again!!" And neither did I!!

I almost set my kitchen on fire on New Year's morning. One reason I prefer to cook outdoors, year round...
I was very stupid that morning. ....didn't do anything to do with the hangover...
