I'm still debating if I want to throw these in the oven for 10 minutes at 475 just to cook out some of the grease?

Ooh, I never thought of baking Sweet Potatoes like that. Nice one, Derek!

mrs bam does it all the time(she is on a diet)

she make sweet potato fries

heat oven to 400*F (205*Celcius)

cut sweet potatoes into fry size pieces
spray cooking spray onto baking sheet
lay fries in a single layer
sprinkle salt or splenda brown sugar(sugar substitute)or cajun seasoning
give the fries another spray of cooking spray

bake in middle rack of oven until they have a slight crisp and then flip the fries over. continue to cook. watch carefully as they burn quickly.

let them cool a bit otherwise they wont be very crispy

Thanx for this! I love sweet potatoes, though I never saw them til I came to Brum (Birmingham, UK) and have never known how to cook them beyond boil.

And as I'm on a diet too, this recipe is ideal.

Good Luck to Mrs. Bams with her diet!

my favorite way to eat sweet potatoes is to bake them slowly until the sugar starts to appear on the outside and carmalizes... lots of butter

Hehe, You know who would have fit because I used Kosher salt? But if I remember what she say's about sweet potatoes they have some kind of benefits.

Gillian Mickeith :)

can you remember what kind of benefits, Derek? i LOVE food with benefits...a good excuse to eat them even on a diet. LOL

Something about omega 3, and making you feel full and something about giving you plenty of energy.

oh ok. they sure do fill me up and make me feel good. weird about the omega 3 though, i thought that was only oily fish. guess a person learns something new every day. :)

Caitlin, I'm vaugh about what I can remember, I've only seen her show a few times when it came to American telly.

..... and pepper.
BTW, is there a difference really between sweet potatoes and yams?!?

Funny story, ya mind?

I took a trip to Rhode Island a few years ago to visit a Navy friend who worked at Newport (Naval College)..
We went shopping for food for Thanksgiving.
There was this woman standing in line at the grocery store ahead of us.
She sent her teenaged son back for butter, saying..
"You know him.. he likes his yeeeeeeeaaaaaamms widda lodda buddah"
My introduction to RuddIsland speak lol

lol, Well it takes all kinds I suppose :)

By the way Caitlin, Here you go http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=foodspice&dbid=64#healthbenefits

Sweet potato benefits.

If I'm not mistaken you can only get sweet potatoes in the US. Yams are not the same as sweet potatoes and are only found in Asia or somewhere like that. It's just a marketing thing to call them yams here.

We bake sweet potatoes all the time. Dh loves them with steak.

Actually Hc, You can get them in the Uk, at the health food stores, That's where Gillian always tell her clients to go and looking around for them.

It's quite odd that some of the uk people never heard of sweet potatoes, or even some of the fresh veggies.

Omega 3 is a fat, and vegetables don’t produce it.

Sweet potatoes are more fibrous than regular potatoes, so that is a benefit. Rich in bet-carotene, so another. Loaded with vitamins and minerals, so yet another. They are actually more healthy (when one considers carb density and vitamin content) than regular potatoes.

sweet potatoes/yams are mostly only known in afro-caribbean communities in the UK, like where I live.

it's the same with Asian foods, they're mostly only known in Asian communities here.

No, Sass, yams is just another name for sweet potatoes, they're both the same thing.

check wikipedia

Actually sweet potatoes and yams are not the same thing. Google it and you'll see. You will not see yams in the US. Yams are elongated tubers and yellow in color while sweet potatoes are orange.

Yeah, I just read that but as us Brits are not big on vitamins (but big on carbs) these sound like a good option. I totally love the taste anyways!

What's funny I can't eat them any other way, And for one one who has a bad heart should really have a daily in tank of sweet potatoes.

Yikes, I was going by wikipedia and local stores. But having said that, whatever they call them here, they're all orange.

They call them yams and sweet potatoes here also. Don't really know why though. Maybe cuz it's easier to spell. lol
