I got on FB because a friend was on there. As time went on, I made connections with family members (mine are all over the country) and old friends, bandmates etc that I would never had made otherwise, and two of those (estranged family members) were minor miracles for me personally.

I don't play the games, just like I don't play video games. Simply not interested. As far as the privacy issues/concerns, I don't post anything too scandalous or personal, so I really don't worry about it, and it hasn't "bit me" yet.

Obviously, its not for everybody.

I joined it too Bob for the sole purpose of keeping up with my stepdaughter in West Yorkshire. She asked me to.
Next thing you know, I am getting people sending me add requests (who are you? who who who who lol)..
Then I forgot about it for a while.
Right now some of the young gals at work are always going on about "did you see what so-and-so wrote on her wall?"..
Or they talk about how they requested to be someone's friend just so they could have access to nosing around on their page.
Right now, Leeanne and I communicate through email and yahoo messenger, just like we did before she found farcebook.

Oh I hear you Sass. Really and truly, its a young persons domain. At first, I would get "add" requests from people I didnt know, and I would add them, only to be solicited to buy their "personal" photos!:yum:

After I learned the ropes, so to speak, I was able to control (somewhat) my content. I still get odd requests, but now I just blow them off.

And truth be told, now that I have connected with old friends and estranged family members, I could just as easily walk away from it. The "fun" has worn off, it has lost its luster. But it seems like every so often, some one will "appear" from my past, and I'm always glad for it.

I personally enjoy forums like this much more, simply because there is common thread (in this case cooking) that unites everyone, and as you well know, friendships develop from that, so it essentially becomes a "social networking" site, albeit one that is much more mature.

:applause::agree:

extremely well said, sk.

it worries me a liitle of what sociological effects these sites like facebook will have on the future of the younger generations.

it could have positive effects, such as causing them to think more before writing something, to become more tactful. also, to write better grammatically, as even the smartest people look stupid when they write poorly.
could it cause them to have more independent thought once they learn it's attractive?

or, will it have a hand in creating a generation of soulless, vapid, self-absorbed a-holes?

soulless, vapid, self-absorbed a-holes?
I'd wager that most Facebookies spend the majority of their time on there to gawk at what the "friends" are posting, to gain as many friends as they can, to live their lives vicariously through someone they can't compete with-yet want to buddy-up with :yum:
I know that a lot of people enjoy it, but I don't get it and never will.
My sister is obsessed with that farm town, farmville whatever the hell it is.
She told me it was fun and got pissed at me when I refused to add her to my list of friends like a year ago!
She lived right across the street from me at the time.
I told her if she wanted to do something fun, to invite me over for dinner and a movie, and to get her ass off the computer wonderland.
God sakes! lol

That's what I got out of it...as a way to reach out to people from the past that you've lost touch with...to "reconnect" with them. School mates, relatives, friends from places I worked at before. It's nice to utilize the photos component to see their families, etc.

I deleted my Facebook account, and Myspace, and all the others. Just didn't want to deal with them anymore.
My son just opened a FaceBook account. I know because I get copies of all the emails he sends and receives, as I do with my oldest daughter as well. I aint a stupid Dad, and I am going to go take issue with him in a bit here, LOL.

Myspace is even worse than Facebook.
All that bling bling crap... blahh..

I have a FB account, but have never used it. Don't really see the point.
Speaking of such things, I have a lot of online friends who keep sending me invites to places like Plaxo, hi5 and others.
I tell them WE TALK ONLINE on a messenger or a forum, WHY do we need something else?
The way I see it, if you can't just speak to someone privately whom you choose to stay in contact with, then why bother?
I don't care if Jane or John Doe have a trillion added friends who they will never know or speak to again.
Agreed that Facebook is a useful tool for some who run across old friends.
Perhaps I shouldn't be so harsh about it, but I really think it's a dumb place to hang out for a whole lot of reasons.

FYI everyone, check out this account security application, called SaveFace. It's from one of the guys that developed Untangle..which is an excellent business grade firewall that I use at a lot of my SBC clients.
http://www3.untangle.com/saveface

Free, and very easy to install. You use it to lock down your FB account settings.

I still have mine and reset my personal info. I like my farm, cafe and pet too much, lol. Plus, I get to see what family is up to that I don't get to see regularly.

Yea, and how bout the new version of 'spam' that is going around, invites to view girls Windows Live photo albums.... uggggg! Ya just know its some fat bald guy... no wait that's me... ya just know its some pimpled faced teenager tryin to snag yer email address.

I like fb more than email for keeping up with pics of the kids and things.... I have too much a.d.d. to sit and write out emails weekly to bunches of people who may or may not give a flying fudge. A sentence every other day.... good enuf. Reply if u want. I dont care.

I used to play the games, I got bored. alot bored. I have made several good friends that I would never have made before these formus, and chitchat moving out of them has worked well for everyone don't you think?

I dont make friend requests lightly. I've made maybe 10. I don't accept them lightly either. It does not make me dumb, naive, or stupid if I use facebook. You don't care what someone is up to? Don't read it, maybe you shouldnt have "friended" them anyway. I think fb is America at its finest... the freedom to pick and choose for yourself.
