Halibut

As I mentioned yesterday, we went to Westport and bought the last halibut off the Miss Kathleen.
Chuck Custer was the charter captain I used to fish with till he went commercial.

We got the filet pieces vacuum packed this morning and in the freezer.

We went for a walk on the paved path before heading to Bennett’s for lunch. They have a lot of ground cover plants and unusual rocks along the break water. I watched a boy trying catch ocean pear h which hang out close to shore. I’ll have to try that some time.

Nice photos, John - looks like a great day!

My brother once bought halibut steaks for us, and I remarked that it was okay, but I'd like to try a filet. He sputtered that halibut was so huge that a filet would be the size of his truck.

Looking at your cut pieces, I guess I meant I'd like a PIECE of a filet.

They look terrific!

They are good but tend to be a mild tasting fish. The piece I’m grilling today will be basted with olive oil, sweet paprika, cumin, lemon zest, and thyme. I’ll have to be careful not to burn it.

The way it is raining I may have to grill this with the grilling feature on our stove. It should be interesting.

The fabricator that Moondog Dive Outfitters works with went on a fishing trip to Alaska. He brought back quite a bit of Halibut when he returned, and gave us some. It was great. The closest fish we have to compare is hogfish. Although they can be caught on hook and line, most of the time they are taken by spearfishing. When I was driving a cattle dive boat back in the '80's I used to have a bunch of cops from the city I lived in come out for some spearfishing on Fridays. One of the sergeants, while on his own boat, had taken a 23 pound hogfish with a polespear. That is huge for that species.
