Grimm's Fairy Tales

I didn't want to hijack today's dinner thread, so I started a new one. This is related to the dinner thread where Bucky and Lilbopeep started talking about how Grimm's Fairy Tales aren't suitable for children. I've loved Grimm's Fairy Tales since I was a child and my mom gave me a beautiful blue and gold edition of the book. Most people don't know that originally, the weren't meant to be children's stories. From http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Grimms-Fairy-Tales/Brothers-Grimm/e/9781593080563

When Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm set out to collect stories in the early 1800s, their goal was not to entertain children but to preserve Germanic folklore—and the hard life of European peasants was reflected in the tales they discovered. However, once the brothers saw how the stories entranced young readers, they began softening some of the harsher aspects to make them more suitable for children.

Today's trivia

Is this what your book looked like?

I don't think I've had the pleasure of reading Grimm's Fairy Tales, but now I'm quite intrigued. Guess I should find me a copy.

I loved how Cinderella's stepsisters hacked their feet to bloody stumps so they could try to fit into the glass slipper...

who wants to babysit? 'cause if you're gonna read it to my son, you'd better be prepared to sit up all night with him.

looking at this backwards sort of way, i realized just how innocent my boy is at 5, and how much we've done to protect him from the evils in the world.

i don't think i really need to rush his knowledge of how crappy the world can be. i want him to be as blissfully innocent as long as possible.

hacked feet and cooked children will become real enough for him someday.

speaking of "real", one of our faves is the velveteen rabbit.

I love the velveteen rabbit!!! For years when I was little I'd fall asleep KNOWING for sure that all my dolls came to life and played while I was sleeping. I even slept in different directions because I was afriad that the dolls on the left would feel more loved than the ones on the right if I wasn't looking at them when they woke up for the evenings fun and games. So one night I'd sleep on my left side and the next night I'd sleep on my rights side... :yum:

( I was a weird child!!! I know)

lol, umm, i gotta stop stealing threads. sorry, gg.

back to der bruder grimm.

pssst, lll. check out "little whistle" by cynthia rylant, about toys coming to life at night...

Hey, dude, chill  My point was that these are *not meant* to be children's stories. Here's a better option that would probably be a lot more fun for both of you: [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Adventures-Curious-George/dp/0618164413/ref=cm_lmf_tit_5"]The Complete Adventures of Curious George[/ame].

thanks, gg.

we love george and the man in the yellow hat.

we have several curious george books: c. george visits a toy store, c. george and the pizza, c. george and the toy store, c. george flies a kite, and curious george and the firefighters.

i also happen to like the cartoon on pbs, with william h. macy narrating. when i read the books, i try to emulate his down to earth, reassuring but curious style of narration.

as far as the grimm tales, i had no idea how macabre they are. did you (or anyone) see the movie that was out a few years ago? was it any good, or at least true to the stories?

the grim brothers goal was to document urban legends and folk tales, no?

we really mess our kids up from birth!!

Rock a bye baby on the tree top,
When the wind blows the cradle will rock,
When the bough breaks the cradle will fall,
And down will come baby, cradle and all.

I bought a mother goose nursery rhymes book after my first girl was born, because Grimm's tales were out after they scared the poop outta me!!
Sweet wholesome mother goose

Wow, I've never heard "See Saw, Margery Daw".

Mother Goose isn't that much better than Grimm if you think about it. I can't think of any popular nursery rhymes that aren't morbid or mature...when you really pay attention to the words. :glare:

I don't remember much of the movie, but I don't believe it was about any particular fairy tale...more just a scary story.

i hope no one has a need to sing "ring around the rosey".

Actually, I almost posted that rhyme as an example. It's about the Plague. How wholesome is that?!? But I remember singing that (and doing the corresponding "dance") a lot, when I was a kid.

you mean ronjohn's latest creation, a dark ale????

asses to asses, we all fall down... (well, that's how he sings it after a bender :))

I'm curious about why you think these stories would mess anybody up. Kids have the most amazing imaginations, it seems to me that they would take them in stride, and even add to them. I think incorporating ideas like this into stories gives people a feeling of power over what can be scary - like the plague.

I feel the same way, BT. Almost all of the fairy tales are too weird for little kids, IMO. I've always changed them (or made up my own) to make them the kind of stories I want my little ones to dream about.
