That was a frequent meal in our house in the 50's & early 60's, and us 5 boys always made short order of it. Mom called it Dog-n-Spuds (a takeoff of the Dog-n-Suds drive thru restaurant chain). Dad hated it because it reminded him of the bad times during the Great Depression, but us kids liked it because it tasted good. Mom used bacon grease (kept under the sink in a Mason jar) instead of oil. I'm sure that's why we loved it so much. I'm going to have to resurrect that meal one of these days.

A close cousin of that meal is the sausage (Hillshire varieties) with onions & potatoes that we make, and to which we add whatever fresh veggies we happen to have in the crisper. Mostly it's onions and green pepper, but this one below had red peppers and broccoli. (I use EVOO instead of bacon grease, but I do keep bacon grease & Schmaltz in Mason jars in the fridge.) This is a great one-pot meal, and it's quick to prepare if you use sliced potatoes from a can. Sausages are good, but sometimes nothing can take the place of a hot dog.

Our "depression" meals were either potato soup, or "grout," which was a plate of creamy rice, with butter, cinnamon, and sugar on top. And a favorite treat was saltine crackers with milk on top, like cereal.
