Do you Brine?

Deadly Sushi

I have cooked a few birds using the brining method. Has anyone else tried this method? If not would you consider it? :smile:

We brine turkey's, especially wild turkey at Thanksgiving. They come out very moist in the end, especially the wild turkey. They are not fed and plumped up like domestic "butterball" types.

Place turkey in ice chest
Sprinkle a cup of rock salt over the turkey
Add a fifth of Wild Turkey whiskey
Add water to just cover turkey
let soak over night.

They cook up very moist when using this technique. Interestingly, we got this from Martha Stewart a 10 or 12 years ago. We like to brine them like this, and then toss them on the Weber...

One thing I would note though, is when finished, clean the ice chest. Then put two caps full of bleach in it. Fill it up with water, and let sit for an hour. Then dump out and let air dry. That sanitizes it, before you put your beer and camping food in the ice chest.

We've always been intrigued by it and talked about trying it but haven't gotten around to it. Perhaps when it's BBQ time again we'll give it a go.
