Disposing of old nonstick cookware

I've got bunches of cheap stuff that I've been replacing with Calphalon upgrades. Most of it is scratched or flaking, so I can't donate it. What is an acceptable way to dispose of old unusable nonstick cookware?

I would think it could be recycled. If your local recycling will not accept it, you can probably just throw it out. Our center tells us what the correct disposal is if they won't take it.

the local dumpster will do - or an aluminum / metal recycler.

somehow there's the theory that Teflon will kill you, cannot be safely disposed, etc etc has set in. the theory is megasupernova hyperbole. Teflon is inert - you can eat it, the dog can eat it, the cat can eat it, the birds can eat it, the fish can eat it. it just gets pooped out.

Well that explains why I never have to clean my toilet.

chowder's right! you can eat teflon with no ill effects.

i had an old gf who tried to make me dinner in my apartment years ago. as she served the mashed potatoes, i wondered why she put so much black pepper in them. after dinner, i asked about the speckled spuds, but she said she didn't add any pepper. she just added milk and butter (to the potatoes in the non-stick pot) and used a cake mixer to whip them up.

i got rid of the pan the next day, the gf soon after. :glare:

just as an aside, overheating teflon gives off around 6 different toxic gasses, but even that would take a lot to kill you. the gasses are immediately fatal to birds, but humans just get flu-like symptoms for a day or two.
