Dinner Saturday 21 March -What's on??

First, Vera, we call that pasta=Bucatini. It's one of my favorite long pastas. And I couldn't find it anywhere done here for years. Now, Publix carries it, for those down here looking for it.

I cooked for 7. Whew! Big difference cooking for one and always having too much leftover, and cooking for 7 with leftovers. Don't know how ya'll do it all the time.
The most I've cooked for on a regular basis was 2, and always too much left over.
1. Cleaned and sliced one of those big packs of button mushrooms. Then made a marinade of red wine, soy sauce, terriyaki sauce, minced garlic, a touch of sesame oil, some regular oil, and fresh ground black pepper. Put it in one of those throw-away foil pans.
2. Shucked 4 ears of corn, broke them in half, brushed them with
melted butter, salt & pepper, and wrapped in foil.
3. Peeled a bunch of carrots & potatoes, and par steamed them. Cut up an onion and placed in another throw-away foil pan. Put some oil & butter in and wrapped in heavy duty foil.
4. Peeled and sliced lengthwise 6 plantains I bought last Sat. to yellow up all week. Brushed them with softened butter, and placed in another throw-away pan.
5. Shaped 5 burgers out of a lb. of hot italian sausage meat.
6. Made a lettuce & tomato salad with simple italian vinegrette.

I put the potatoes & carrots on the grill first, with the corn on the coolest part of the grill, along with a package of Johnsonville Stadium Brats. When the brats were done, I removed them and put the mushrooms on. Boy, they imparted so much water I had to dump most of the liquid. But they were fantastic!
I opened up the potatoes & carrots and had to keep stirring so the bottom wouldn't burn. And had to keep turning the corn too.
I have no clue how to do corn, and ultimately, I think it sucked, but the kids ate it up. Lastly, I took all the above off the grill and put on 6, on the thin side, porterhouse steaks, and the sausage patties. Things were a bit crouded, but the patties shrunk sooo much! But the rolls I bought were those little egg-twist dinner rolls, and the meat fit perfect. The steak was tasty and tender, but maybe a tad more done than they should have been based on their thickness.
I had made carrot cake cupcakes with cream cheese icing (both boxed stuff-sorry PieSu) at 3am, way before I left for garage sale-ing, so dessert was covered.

Everyone ate like pigs, and for 4 of the most picky eating kids, that's a huge victory! Some salad and 2 brats were left-over. That's it! I, as my reward, took the brats home, damn it. I was exhausted, and got no help from a house 4 people live in that's not mine.
But was thrilled to spend time with dad hanging over my shoulder and us food talking. And it was good to know/see he ate well.

(Boy, was that a long story for a simple cook-out! LOL!
Sorry, ya'll!)

Mav, I wish I had thought ahead about the deviled eggs. I need deviled eggs now. Oh yum!

That sounds like a great time Cali!!
Sometimes it doesn't matter what you serve or how but the time you get to spend with family. It makes all the difference in the world. Glad you shared!

And just where is the braided St. Joseph Bread? The Italians used to make it for St. Joseph Day and then distribute it to the poor. All that beautiful food and no bread? I guess I'll have to take care of that for you. Here's a loaf of plain and a braided loaf to symbolize the unity of the Holy Family. Enjoy!

I thought of baking bread, but was not as motivated as I should have been. Thanks for yours, though!!!!

!

I thought of writing the name...but considered others would not know what I was referring to. There is another one, as well...percatelli. Same concept, just a bit thicker. It's actually harder to twirl than the bucatini, which is why I prefer the bucatini.

Isn't it wonderful when you can suddenly find what you are looking for in a supermarket!

Yup. Percatelli, wonderful too. Well, according to Publix customer service policy, if you want it and ask, they will try to get it for you. They are very good that way.
When dad couldn't find Brioschi, which he swears by, the pharmacy did get it for him.
Sure is good to have 1 good place, at least.
