I am cooking a meal, with guest on the way, and one extremely difficult to find ingredient drops on the floor that is usually clean, I would .....

Just two answers today.....

Probably 5 second rule, but it kind of depends on what the ingredient is.
If it is soft, moist and likely to pick up detritus from the floor... apologize.

If it is something I can rinse off, or isn't likely to have adherents, 5 second rule.

On the assumption that it is an ingredient that can be recovered and rinsed off, I would. If it was some herbs or something that had to be swept or mopped up, then no.

Lots of variables here. Has the ingredient been cooked yet? Will the ingredient be cooked? After the trip to the floor, is the ingredient still viable if rinsed off?

Also in my house, it would probably not get to hit the floor and the rest of the discussion is moot. (Bear & Liam are fast)

If they miss most likely the 5 second rule.

another vote for it depends on other variables.. lefty said that it was difficult to clean, but if it could be cleaned then the 5 second rule applies, especially if it has yet to be cooked.

or you could just add clams, mussels, or leeks to the dish and say it was a little sand...

I voted apologize and order out but it really would depend on what it was. If it can be washed off and is being cooked to safe heats then perhaps. Otherwise I will stick with my original answer.

Same here, wouldn't ever hit the floor in most cases. If they miss it if it is washable 5 second rule applies. If it isn't washable, the 4 legged folks get a second chance!

Lefty said the ingredient was difficult to FIND, not clean, BT.

My floor ALWAYS seems to be dirty, but I say you have to eat a peck of dirt before you die, so whatever it is, it gets served.

Hey, the guests are on their way, and they didn't SEE the thing fall, so they'll never know.

Order out. I watched this show on food network & they tested growth on food after it's been dropped on the floor. Worst one was the lab they were testing in followed by a kitchen kept spotless to being dropped on the street. You can wash it off but your not gonna get the germs off of it.

I think the show was test kitchen or something like that.

You know IMHO I think those studies are a crock....how often have we all done that and still eaten it afterward or worse yet what might happen to our food in restaurant kitchens behind the scenes without our knowing, and yet we are all perfectly fine and healthy...but shows like that make it sound like we will be rushed to emegency from all the massive bacteria we would be consuming...:glare:

OK, here's a personal story. Three of us were going to have steaks at one girl's house. I had purchased the steaks and my friend was going to do the grilling. I was at my house next door, feeding Fisher since he was an infant. Well, apparently my friend had grilled the steaks and they were on the counter resting when the other girl's Rottweiler sauntered over and picked up my steak. (It was mine because I am the only one who has well-done steaks.) They saw it and commanded the dog to drop it, which she did. They washed the steak and then fired it again for a little while, all the while wondering what to do. Should they tell me? I would never know if they didn't because the dog didn't chew it or anything.

They examined the steak carefully and decided not to tell me but in the end, they couldn't go though with it and told me before I took the first bite.

Did you eat it, Terry? I would have!

Dee, good point about what happens in restaurants! I'm much happier not knowing!

+1

Who knows what you get from a restaurant anyway. At least if it was from my floor I know what's been there.

I'd use it....
but then again I taste test my food using the same spoon over and over again. No one has ever died or gotten sick from eating my food. :)

Yes I agree with it depends - most stuff I would use especially if it is the pre cooked version - cooking will kill all the germs & a quick rinse remove dirt.
