Chinese Long Beans

I picked these up at my Asian supermarket, on the recommendation of one of my Italian customers who said they were delicious. Said they taste a little like asparagus.

Well, they are delicious and tender! But they taste like green beans.

I am growing them in my garden, too, but still don't have any flowers.

I just washed them, cut off the ends, cut them in thirds or fourths, steamed them, and dressed them with a little S & P, butter and a splash of olive oil.

I think maybe Szechuan style next time.

This was my dinner tonight, since I ate about 1/3 of the rotiss chicken I bought right when I got it home!

Whoa, those really are long. I've never seen them before. It makes me wonder what could be done by keeping them full length, though. Maybe something artsy? They look strong enough to be wrapped around things, so I know I'd have some fun experimenting with them....even if they do taste just like green beans anyway.
 
i bought these a few months ago. then they got to the point where they were put in the garbage can. i'm gonna get anoter batch if they're that good! i think i'd use teriyaki, citrus & sesame on them
 
I've eaten them in a restaurant with a light tempura type batter and deep fried. They were absolutely delicious.
 
Yes, they were long. It was actually in a Thai restaurant, and the owner had grown them in her garden. The batter was very, very light.
 
I had almost forgotten about long beans. I used to purchase them at a huge Asian market (& seafood place) out here. They were wrapped and wrapped around & secured with rubber bands. The last time I checked them out, they were covered throughout with tiny black spots, & a darker green in color. I passed, as I wasn't sure if that was the "norm." I read their peak season is around November. I'll have to go back again & check in a few months. I cut them in half, place in a colander in the sink, rinse & drain. I made a stir-fry with shrimp, & it was delish.

ETA: The Asian market also carried elongated/slender eggplant that were almost lavender in color. Will have to give them a try.

You reminded me of these beer-battered green beans with remoulade sauce & limes.
