I can't abide dinner plates, etc. in matched sets............ I have Mom's "fine china" in the china closet / hutch, and that's where they stay........my fetish is that I like to match a plate color/design to the dish..........
So I keep an assortment around.............

I've got a few others in the cabinet not pictured, and about twenty others in the basement and every once-in-a-while, I'll change up !
Warden thinks I'm crazy, but she puts up with it.
When we have dinner guests, they get to pick their plate !

Sounds like fun but I tend to use matched dinner services. My mom had a friend Mrs. Apple who had a lot of antique cups and saucers and when she had tea, she would often even mismatch the cups and saucers. She was a dear lady who loved to bake and she and her late husband has a childrens' orphanage in Israel.

I only have one set that matches and it's clear, lol
the rest are mismatched. If I like a design, I will buy 2.

I have a matched set, but love to buy pretty plates of unusual design at antique shops etc..

Not me though I have a 8 setting full set of my grandmother's Johnson Brothers Old Britain Castles that has 2 gravy boats, serving bowls, serving trays, coffee cups, soup bowls bread plates and on an on, a really lot of china. I have it stored for now in several wooden crates designed to hold it but ate every meal I got at home till I got married off of those plates. Not a single one has so much as a chip in it. These will go to one of my grand kids after my wife and I are gone. The very bottom is the picture of the pattern on it.

Now as for the dishes we use I have a 8 pc matching set shown below. The dishes and glasses came from Target and the rice bowls came from Koren's in NYC. I have a couple of the dark green plates with a few bowls and a couple of white plates and bowls both unknowns just odd pieces. As for glasses I have a few odds and ends such as rock glasses and such that don't match anything but do use what ever I grab. Plating to me doesn't mean much really.

Oh and LT that dark green plate you had with yours actually looks like the same as the green plates and bowls I have a few pieces of.

We don't get fancy when it comes to liquids either...............

Somehow, drinking sweet tea out of a Mason Jar Look-alike carries me straight back "home"............

I'm pretty anal about dinnerware-I insist that the plates always match.....

plate_lime_cay.jpg
Of course, I use Styrofoam for guests.........

That is probably where my wife picked it up too. We have moved so much in our life it has been hard to impossible to keep stuff like furniture, dishes, pots/pans and other things like that. Here are some of the other mismatched plates such as the green and different whites. As I said only have bits and pieces of these. Same with coffee cups as I have several mugs and cups that match nothing really.

There used to be an Amish restaurant around here that served with mismatched everything!
So cool.
Yup, the drinks were served in mason jars. :-)
I know they do that at a lot of those types of places.

Sass, I think they refer to it as being "Bohemian" when its a good thing. For example, my clothes are "Bohemian" as well as my furniture!!:yum: Very hip!!

Great shots, JoeC !
It appears your greenie has a little bit deeper well than mine........great for gravy and sauce dishes........

Well, bless my bib overalls, SmokeKing, does that mean that I too, am Hip?
(I used to be "hip" back in the stoned age:yum:)

My dinner plates aren't as eclectic as yours are, LT, but I love the idea of varying them up some more.

Good thing to be hunting for at yard sales!

We have fine china but rarely use it, and another really nice but small set of Danish stoneware from when we got married 40 years ago (no longer made). But what we use for everyday and for most family and casual company dinners is this, from Williams-Sonoma:

Everything looks good on white!

But my wife also likes to collect Polish Stoneware, and we have a lot of serving pieces in various patterns of it, similar to this:

Odd...when I was kid, my parents never had matching dishes. Everything was second-hand. The flatware mostly came from diners...don't ask. So I have two sets of service...both tempered glass. One Arcopal, white with very frilly edges. The other is from Japan, late '50's. Off-white, kind of oyster, very Japanese and understated. The Japanese has much nicer cups. But I did collect plates, sort of, with one of my exes. We hit the thrifts for orphan dishes, teapots and gravy boats to build a fountain and pond in the front yard. Very different. I think it makes the koi nervous, living in a home made of dinner plates.

I don't suppose you still have a photo of that fountain and pond, gad? I'd love to see that!
